Couldn't find any Thorntons in Ludlow on the 1851. Could they be in one of the surrounding villages?

Yes, could well be
I'm afraid I have so little on this 'branch'
The son mentioned came to NZ somewhere in
1860-70's - probably in the Army.
I have only scant info from his marriage/death
certificate. 

Mothers maiden name was Carpenter.
I am hoping the middle name of Tantrim, being somewhat
unusual will give me a lead at some stage.

In any even certainly in 1841 he's still in England and will
be young enough to be still at home with his parents.
