Ciauddley woods
« on: Thursday 16 June 05 02:51 BST (UK) »

this is a very odd request , but mum is asking me about a place she used to play as a kid, not sure how its spelt, but Sounds like, Kyuddley woods, it was on brampton road, leaving warwick bridge towards corby hill, was on the edge of irthing river, does anyone that lives in that area know of these woods, i spent many hours doing searchs , useing all diffrent spellings of the word and have got nowhere, so this is my last resort,

Any help REALLY appreciated,

thanks

Try ringing a local estate agent.  You will probably find that it is a housing estate now!
Actually the ordnance survey mapping site might well have it on - or buy a big scale map of the area.

Hi Audery,

Thanks for all the help you have given me, I really  do appreciate it,
Being in Australia its a bit hard to access details, I keep searching old maps that i can find on the net, but so far nothing, not knowing how it was spelt also does'nt help me, but I will keep searching, as you say probably a houseing estate, but mums says not, as it was only small, and right on the edge of a cliff,,,

thanks again

Hi Suzanne

just a though I had - don't suppose it could have been a copse of trees or a small wood that belonged to someone / was on their land / was named after a previous landowner.  So it would be Kyuddley's Wood or similar?  Depending on the timeframe and how old your mum is might be worth looking on the 1881 or 1891 census to see if it gives any clues and names of families that lived or farmed in the area.  Not suggesting your Mum dates back to the 1880s or earlier but the name might!

I don't know the area in any great detail but the only larger woods in that area are Gelt Woods and from what you have described these aren't right (too far away and I think wrong river).  Another option could be to be cheeky and get in touch with a local company by e-mail - the church have a website at:

After taking your advice, I think maybe it is something like Clay Hudley woods, as mum says it was mostly a clay cliffe, and Hudley seems to come up on searches, but no woods, will keep looking tho,,,
