I'm good in a darkromm with a 35mm camera but computer re-enhancement really are beyond me. I understand filters and developers but not layers. Try as I like, with as many different software packages as I can find, all I make is a mess.
The two images here are my next-door neighbours brother and mother which I have cleaned up for her, but I'd like to bring life back into them. All help appreciated.

Howdy fin, these two photos are in pretty good condition so not a lot of work is required to give them a bit of a lift. With the sailor, I adjusted the levels on the Red, Green and blue channels. Then cleaned up a few dust and noise marks. Thats about it for him.
With Mary's Mum, If you look at the green channel you can see where you use the clone tool. So on the green channel I selected the area at the bottom of the picture where the repeating pattern is at its worst and applied a Gaussian blur. I also cleaned as best I could the stain that runs across her chest and the stain in the embroidery work. I then applied the neat image filter to the whole picture to remove the noise. Then I desaturated the picture to a grayscale and finally appled a sepia tone.
Unfortunately at these low resolutions the jpeg artifacts tend to make them look a bit dodgy, but that's the nature of the beast.

This photo is in good condition as well. So not a great deal needed doing. First duplicate the Layer. Then added a Levels adjustment Layer. Next step I added a brightness/contrast adjustment Layer and reduced the contrast slightly. Next remove scratches and marks. Finally ran the neat image filter to remove noise.

...just one little request...how can I turn the two b&w images to colour? I tried 'painting' them in but I just finish-up with a mess.

Hi fin, What programe are you using to do graphics?
You can do this yourself with a little bit of practice. You will need a program that has layers. Layers are just like putting sheets of clear acitate over the photo that you add colour to.

I would say all of these images could look almost "new" with a bit of cleanup. It's tedious, but all those little spots should be cleaned up. Again, the devil is in the details. Here's a tutorial I wrote, for a way to clean up an image without using the clone tool (bonus- it also shows you how to use a layer mask). http://retouchpro.com/tutorials/?m=show&id=63

...I know where I can get a copy of PhotoPlus7. Could I do it with either of these?
Thanx, Fin

Hi Fin, I checked out the documentation for Photoplus6, and it does utilize layers. So it should work with colorizing. http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/software/PhotoPlus/tutorials/default.asp

It is truly awesome. If you don't mind Vikki I will put your link in the locked topics at the top of the forum so it doesn't get lost. I think I will put some other links to some of RetouchPRO's other tutorials that should be basic reading for learners.

deadants, I don't mind at all. I'm flattered!
I can see that fin is looking to get the motorcycle photo "brought to life", but I really liked this image, and wanted to see it in color. I didn't do a lot of clean up, as I was more interested in coloring. (I have the larger image colored, but thought best to post a smaller version). Vikki

You have set the standard we should aspire to achieve. I'm off to follow the tutorial on worth1000 on colorizing http://www.worth1000.com/tutorial.asp?sid=161015&page=1 you suggested the other day. You have spurred me on. I'm sure fin will be surprised when she sees your transformed photo.

Vikki, I cannot thank you adequately. I printed your work onto photopaper and presented it to Mary. There were tears in her eyes and she extends her warmest thanks to you also. She really is a lovely kind lady, who would do anything for anyone and never looks for thanks or praise, really the 'Neighbour From Heaven'.
Kind regards and many best wishes, Fin

That's a fine compliment, deadants.
Fin, her appreciation is what makes doing these worthwhile. If I had known you were going to print it, I would have posted the larger image. I had some more time to play, so I made another adjustment.

Vikki you are amazing and I can't thank you enough. I am going to load PhotoPlus7 onto my computer and will try my hand at breathing life into my own old photos - I have so many 35mm negatives I had to buy a FilmScan 35 to copy them onto the computer. With a 35mm in my hand or locked in a darkroom I'm fine but I guess it's time I tried to catch up with technology - and with your excellent tutorial maybe I'll be able to move out of the 19th century!
I shall now print off this image and frame it for her.
Many thanks, Fin
