Hi Honeybun
Thats OK - its a pleasure
The census entry looks very interesting - them living in 2 Asylum Cottages.
Looking at the Occupations of others on the scan, (night lunatic attendant, etc) they all seem to be working in the Asylum as was your ancestor
Bet they could tell us a few stories that would make our hair curl if they were still alive

Hi there
If you go to the following:
http://www.qmhcarshalton.net/index.htm
where it says - "Just off Boundary Road in to Banstead Asylum (on open ground). ..."
and there are lots of pictures of the Asylum for Children before it became a hospital
"There has been occupation of the Queen Mary's Hospital site since the Neolithic period (*New Stone Age). The land on which Queen Mary's was built was purchased in 1896 by the Metropolitan Asylums Board for £13,550 from the Stanley Estates. When the buildings on the original 136 acre site were completed in 1906, it was called the Southern Hospital. It stood empty until 1909. Originally designed as a convalescent fever hospital, but not needed for this purpose, it became available for other uses. It came about that when the Local Government Board proposed, as a means of relieving the pressure on the accommodation for the sick poor in the metropolis, that the Metropolitan Asylums Board should undertake the care of such sick children as were suitable for removal from the infirmaries, their request could at once be complied with."
http://www.doc.ic.ac.uk/~cjh/woodhurst/j2wban.html shows an admission record for the Asylum

Hi Honeybun
I think that at 49, he is a bit old to be still in the forces.
The asylum would have great big Coal Fired boilers for heating and hot water and he was in one of their cottages
Just a thought
