« on: Thursday 12 April 07 19:42 BST (UK) »

I am looking for an Isabella McCormack from Caithness born around 1845. She married John McLeod and had a daughter Catherine born in Fife around 1874.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks

Hi there

I wonder if this might be the indexing for the marriage your refer to?

1862 MCLEOD JOHN CORMACK ISABELLA WICK BURGH /CAITHNESS

It looks possible that this is the same family on the 1871 census still in the parish of Wick.  If this is them I wonder if perhaps this first Catherine died and they had another in 1874?

John McLeod age 35 head b. Uig Lewis occupation-laborer
Isabella McLeod age 30 wife b. Latheron, Caithness
Catherine McLeod age 4 dau. b. Wick, Caithness

Best wishes
Jean

I wonder if I have the wrong parents for Catherine. I am going back to research I did when I was a teenager and I haven't checked it out since.

The daughter Catherine married James Robertson at Pollockshields on 10/11/1885. She was born in Fife  21/11/1874 . I can't be sure as it was a long time ago now!

Hi again

Well...the quickest way to know is for yo u to check the birth certificate you have of Catherine from 1874 and see what is stated as the date of marriage of her parents.  If that date matches the date of the couple in Wick in 1862 then we've got the right couple.

Best wishes

Thankyou, the only problem is I don't have the birth certificate. I think I got the information from scotlandspeople. I will go back and see if the document is still saved there and have a peek.

Thanks

Ok, I found the marriage record for James Robertson and Catherine McLeod at Pollockshields. 10.11.1885. It gives Catherines parents as John McLeod (desceased) and Isabella Cormack (formerly McLeod) maiden name Cormack. I presume she changed back to her maiden name after her husband died?

It doesn't give her place of birth, but it does give her age as 18 which makes her year of birth 1866-68.

There are 48 on scotlandspeople that were born at this time and would cost me a fortune to go through them all until I find the right parents! I don't know an easier way to do it.

The marriage I have for John McLeon and Isabella Cormack is 5th April 1862 in Wick
He being 29 and she 23.

I cannot find another marriage for a couple with these names at all.

I am close to screaming now! lol

Ok how about this?  Where did you get the info that Catherine was born in Fife?  Do you have her on a census stating this?  If not then it's very very possible given the age you just stated that the family I gave you in 1871 is the correct one....and the daughter with them is your Catherine!!!

Since you know the Catherine you want to trace was married to James Robertson then find them on the first census after marriage and see where she says she was born (if you haven't done this already!).

Best wishes

Catherine is showing Wick in her 1891 entry and an 1867 birth year, so Jean's 1871 census entry looks like it could well be her:

James Robertson 26, pastry baker, b. Airdrie
Catherine Robertson 23, b. Wick
Isabella Robertson 4, b. Glasgow
John Robertson    2, b. Govan

Address: 49 Commonside St, Airdrie

Regards.
