POLAND: Polish Widower - where to start?
« on: Thursday 16 June 05 10:08 BST (UK) »

Hi

Please bear with me - I am new to this!
My mother in law died recently and when her children have beengoing through the necessary paperwork they found out that their (deceased) dad was listed as 'widower' on their marriage certificate.
They were not aware of this and are intrigued to find out some history.
He came to England from Poland in 1946 and his registration card said 'Married' on it. When he married mum in 1952 the marriage certificate said 'widower'.
Is there any way we can find out what happened in between - it possible - even likely - that his first wife was left in Poland.
Any idea where we start?

Thanks in advance.

More info - I don't know whether it may (or may not) help:

Dad was Jan Materna, born 27th January 1918 in Rudki, near Lvov (then in Poland, now Ukraine) and came to England in '46.
Apparently his registration card said married. I am trying to find out if he settled somewhere else in England before he came to Sheffield.
He died June 3rd 1989 in Sheffield.

When he married mum in 1952 he was a widower. They married in Sheffield.

Questions are: is it possible to find out who he married first time and when did she die? Or even, DID she die? How possible is it that she was left in Poland and assumed dead?

Whole new can o' worms...
