MARSHALL- North Wales
« on: Wednesday 15 June 05 12:08 BST (UK) »

Hi. I have tried without success to find the parents of my great-grandmother, Sarah Ann MARSHALL, who was born about 1862 in Manchester, of Welsh parents from Denbighshire or Flintshire. Thanks to Aynsley, I found Sarah Ann's husband's parents and siblings, listed as MILNES (should be MILNER), in the 1891 Census. I found Sarah Ann, her husband, John Henry MILNER, and their 2 daughters, in the 1891 Census, listed as MINER (should be MILNER), but have had no luck finding her in the 1871 or 1881 Census. She married John Henry MILNER in 1885 and had Edith (my grandmother) and Nellie, and, after his death in 1892, she married William CADMAN, and had two more children, Horace and Leah.

Hi Sue,

Thanks for replying. Unfortunately, I do not know her parents' given names, but I had a feeling her father was William or John Marshall, and I think he was a policeman, but whether in Wales or Manchester, I don't know. However, I have searched the 1871 Census Index and very few people called Marshall (and I typed in Mars* to find misspellings) in the right age group,  were listed as having moved from Wales to Manchester prior to Sarah's birth in 1862. As I am Australian, and have no family in the UK, it is quite difficult. Cheers, Jos.

Hi Jos,
I had no luck finding Sarah aged 9 +/- 2 years, born Lancashire with Welsh parents on the 1871 census for England. I also tried John/William Marshall (no age) born Wales & living in Lancashire without success. I also checked the 1871 census for Wales & this is the nearest I could find, but looks unlikely its your Sarah.

RG10/3735 Folio 49
John Marshall Head 41 b Sealand, Flintshire, Wales   Labourer
Sarah Marshall Wife 40 b Hope, Flintshire, Wales
Sarah Ann Marshall Dau 11 b Wressham, Derbyshire
Richard Winterbottom GrSon 12mths b Chester, Cheshire
Wainwright Cottages, Hawarden Sealand,  Flintshire, Wales

Do you have Sarah's marriage cert to John? This will at least confirm who her Fathers name was.

Hi Sue,

Thank you for everything; I agree, it seems unlikely these Marshalls are mine.

I didn't think of the marriage certificate, but I have my grandmother's, (Sarah's daughter Edith), which shows John Henry Milner as HER father, so will send off for Sarah's, forthwith! Have fathers always been included on marriage certificates?

Thanks again, Jos.

Jos,
It was usual to include the Fathers names & occupations of the Bride & Groom on marriage certs, thats of course if the Father was known to them!
