I am currently researching my maternal family line WEBB and am faced with an intriguing puzzle, which, I am hoping, someone may be able to help me with.
My maternal grandfather BERT WEBB, was born in 1900 in Welton, Northamptonshire, England and was the son of HERBERT WEBB who also originated from Welton.
All I know about my grandfather is that he married (HARRIETT ANNIE KILBOURN), in the Kettering, Northamptonshire, England area in 1933, subsequently moved to Great Bowden, Leicestershire, England and between 1933 and 1939 had three children (Mavis, Betty and Nancy) before his death (aged 40) in 1941.
My mother (although being only 2 years of age when he died) always maintained that her father had been a sheep farmer in Australia and I am at a bit of a loss as to how to prove or disprove this. From the known dates, I am guessing that if indeed he did go out to Australia to work it would probably have been between 1916 (aged 16) and 1933 (when he married).
Can anyone suggest how I might progress this and where I could possibly look next.

All my ancestors came to Australia pretty early on, so the usual sources I'd use wouldn't be helpful for you. However, the National Archives (www.naa.gov.au) holds passenger lists for many ships into Australia - unfortunately the vast majority are not indexed, so one would need to know at least a year or ship name to get anywhere much. It would be worth a try, though...and you can get in contact with a reference officer through the NAA website, who can help you out with possible avenues of research. Hope this helps a little, I'm sure someone else out there has more and better information than I've got! Prue

Paper and Photograph Conservator I live in NSW, and am researching: BALFOUR (Derry) BIGG (Kent) BONSALL (DBY, NTT, CHS) BRISBANE (Fife) DANKS (STS) DOBSON (BRK) FRANCIS (ESS) GOODE (HAM) HAYNES (Cork) INGRAM (MDX, SOM) LANGWORTHY (Jersey, DEV) MCKAY (Fife, Aberdeen, Banff, Moray, Inverness) MORRISH (LND) NANCARROW (CON) OGILVIE (Moray, LND) STRATHDEE (Banff) SWAN (Fife) WOOD (LND)
I would agree with Prue. The immigrants indexed on the nat archives seem to be post WWII. Thought that I would add, I have found the research assistance from the archives very good. They take 30-40 days to answer a query, but they do answer & advise of anything found (or not found as often happens )
Just a footnote to the other chatters' advice. Think about confining your search -at fist anyway - to the New South Wales and Victoria regions, then Queensland. These were the regions which were "riding on the sheep's back" as we say, in that era and there would have been plenty of casual work for a young man. Sue
