Hi Mags,
Although a census was taken in 1801, 1811, 1821 and 1831, for those censuses the government only wanted to know the number of people in each area, together with their gender and age groups. They did not want to know their names, so only statistical information was gathered. Most of these returns were then destroyed. The surviving summaries have very little value. Some enumerators did list the names of householders. Only a small proportion of these survive. I'm not sure if any exist for Devon. The 1841 census is the first useful one.

I didn't realise that it was just statistical. I thought that it would be the head of the family who was named. Will have to think of some other way to identify the family.
