James Morris - Ledbury
« on: Thursday 16 June 05 20:13 BST (UK) »

Looking for any information on James Morris, born about 1835, birthplace Ledbury.  Can someone do a lookup on the 1851 census for James, age about 16 years, with possible occupation of gardener or gardener’s apprentice?

Thanks in advance

Hello Roy,

There's only one James Morris in the correct age range In Ledbury on the 1851 name index -

1851

Homend Street, Ledbury

Mary Morris        43   Head   Wid   Laundress             Herefordshire, Ledbury
John Morris        17   Son      Un    Mason Labourer           ''                 ''
James Morris    15    Son      Un     Errand boy                    ''                    ''
Edward Morris    13    Son     Un        ''        ''                  ''                 ''
George Morris     11   Son     Un      Scholar                     ''                 ''
Emily B Morris      8    Daur                 ''                          ''                 ''
Benjamin Morris   5    Son                   ''                          ''                 ''
Joseph Morris      4    Son                                              ''                 ''
Henry Morris       2    Son                                              ''                 ''

                             (HO107/ 1875/ 116/ 45)

Does this look like your James?  If so, and you'd like me to look him up on the 1841 census to find his father, let me know.

Hi Sue

Many thanks for your reply.

Yes I believe the entry is of the same James Morris I am researching.  I have also located the family on the 1841 census with John Morris head of the household, occupation of Mason and son James is 06 yrs old.  I have checked the IGI for Herefordshire and located John Morris married to Mary Hodges 7 Feb 1831 in Ledbury.  Ledbury Baptism Record Book has listed Emily (1842) Bishops Street, Benjamin (1844), Joseph (1846) Homend, Henry (1849) Homend and Charles (1849) Homend with parents John & Mary Morris and father’s occupation, Baker. James son of John & Mary baptised 1835, Bishops Street, father’s occupation Mason.  I am not sure when James Morris moved down to South Wales but he was here by the 1871 census.  I have not been able to locate him on the 1861 Census for Glamorgan so could you please do a look up on the 1861 Census for Ledbury or Herefordshire.

Regards

You didn't say if you had Mary in 1861 so have included that too -

                    (RG9/ 1809/ 52/ 5)

If I can help further just ask,

Hi Sue

Can you please do a look up on the 1861 census for John Morris, son of John & Mary Morris, born Ledbury c.1833, who was not at the parental home on census night?  Calculating from the 1851 census his age would be about 17 years.  His occupation on the 1851 census was Mason’s labourer.

Thanks

Sue

Joseph Morris b. 1846, Ledbury.

It’s me again, please say if I am becoming a nuisance and I will stop, but I have just noticed that there is one more son of Mary Morris that was not listed at home on the 1861 census and wondered if you can locate him.

Joseph was age 04 years on the 1851 census so I am looking for him aged about 15 years in 1861.

Many thanks

Hi again,

Don't mind a bit - we are here to help.    Grin

Except......... It's not such good news here, I'm afraid.    Huh   I can't locate a Joseph Morris (born in Lebury) on any of the censuses after 1851.

Sorry    Sad

Hi Sue
Thank you for the kind words "you are there to help” It really is appreciated.

If I can ask more help with the Morris family I have two more quires.

1.   William Morris

Going back over the censuses for John & Mary Morris’s family I note on the 1841 census for Ledbury there was a son William listed aged 09 years but not listed at home after that.  Can you trace him through the 1851, 61 and 71 censuses?  I am led to believe he died in 1873.

2.   John Morris

You located John Morris in Derbyshire on the 1861 census for Chapel-en-le-Frith parish and I think I have found him in Worcester on the 1881 census.  Can you please try to locate him on the 1871 census?
