Leeds town hall Boer war plaque
« on: Thursday 16 June 05 21:37 BST (UK) »

Does anyone know if any pictures exist of this? My great grandfather (John Ernest Charlewood) is listed on it. here is the link I have to the information. He is listed as Charlewood J, Private, 3rd Volunteer Battalion (PWO) WY Regt (Leeds Rifles).

Also any other information on him would be gratefully received. I think he used to be something to do with the Leeds Co-operative Society - we have a commerative plate. Thanks! Smiley

You could probably contact the town hall and ask if they could send you a picture of it.  Smiley

I tried them, and unfortunately they don't have any pictures yet - they plan to add some to their site in the future. Does anyone pass the town hall daily and fancy taking a quick snap for me? Smiley Smiley Smiley

Spongebob,

I want a photo of it too, for the same reason---I think my grandfather might be on it.

I work about 10 minutes walk away, so if it's reasonably accessible, I'll try and get one , probably sometime next week.

Hi Jon,

He looks to be on there alright, I assume you have seen this...

Leeds Town Hall Boer War Plaque

Looks like he was in the same battalion as my G-Grandad too.

Cheers,

Matt,

Bad news, I'm afraid. I've tried to get into the Town Hall to take the photo, and there's a huge convention on with security men (MIB, I jest not) everywhere.

Also, the plaque has been moved, it is no longer in the foyer.

The receptionist said that if I ring in three weeks time or so, the official guide will take me to see it.

As to Pte J.H. Armitage, I don't know that it's my grandfather's name, but it seems more than likely, since he was a professional soldier (a serjeant) in 1909.

Watch this space...very slowly.

Jon,

Thanks for the update, everything is security mad at the moment!

Look forward to hearing again.

Cheers,
