My gggrandad arthur smith was born dec 1868 in Bradford the only record I can find is an Arthur Smith born abt 1869. would this be him as they might not have recorded the birth till the Jan. He died houghton le spring 1949. If this was the case I might have found his mum and dad. james smith and margaret.

I've just looked at the 1881 census for Arthur Smith born around 1868 in Bradford and found two that fit that description.  The other Arthur only has his father listed - Frederick.

Do you have your Arthur's marriage certificate  as that would have his father's name.  It might also have a useful address that you can track him through the census.

Do you want to post up what you have for Arthur so far for us to take a look at?

Ok this is what I have. Arthur Smith born Dec 1868 Died jan 1949 He was maried to A Sarah Ann born 1874 died 1947. The dates were taken from headstones in houghton le spring durham. they had at least 3 children joseph william smith 1898 to 1984, sarah ann and arthur not sure of there dates poss after 1900.
My dad remembers him owning a shop and landlord of a pub (Malsters Arms)both situated in houghton.
