Searching for little needles in big haystacks

Hi All 
I am doing fairly well with my Lincolnshire ancestors and have managed to find quite a bit of info on the net.
The Gloucestershire side are practically non-existant! I have tried the IGI, Free BMD and the NBI, plus several other sites to no avail.
Is the problem just my family  - or is there a dearth of information for Westbury on Severn in general?

I would really appreciate a lookup of the 1851 census.
My great-grandfather Sydney Shepherd was born in 1867 at Shapridge, East Dean.
According to his birth certificate his father was John Shepherd, collier, and his mother Sophia Shepherd, formerly Bullock.
I found a baptism for Sophia Bullock at Mitcheldean, August 1847 and I now have her birth certificate - father John Bullock ( deceased ) and mother, Ann Read. I have since found their marriage on the IGI.
That's about all I know. There is a James Shepherd, Westbury on Severn 1845, on Free BMD and the IGI but I am not sure if if this could be "my" John Shepherd. I don't seem to be able to find anything on the Shepherds at all.
If you can find either John or Sophia I would be estatic!!

Hi Aaron,
Have you had a look on the Genuki site for Gloucestershire (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/GLS/Parishes.html#index) - I always think that Genuki is one of the best places to see what records are available. There is a link to a transcript of the 1851 census for Mitcheldean with the following entry which looks like your Sophia Bullock, and there are also a few more Bullock entries on it.

thanks a million for that census entry - it definitely is the Sophia Bullock I am looking for.
I should have checked Genuki but was too busy messing about on the IGI and Free BMD looking for someone I might recognise!
I have just started on the Gloucestershre side of the family and know very little about them.
