Hi Can anyone offer any help with this query?
I am trying to find out information concerning my gt grandfather GEORGE NELSON GRANT, He was Scottish born (1841 Edinburgh) but sttled in Derby
He worked as a travelling postman/sorter for the GPO, travelling on the mail trains. Sometime in 1876 he had two serious accidents on the railway, resulting in early retirment in Oct 1876, although I have his working record from the Post Office archives, the accident and compensation is mentioned, but not WHERE it happened or any other details. So, I wonder if it would have been reported in a local Derbyshire newspaper, especially as it was called "serious" unfortunately I am unable to travel (being disabled) otherewise I could go to Derby and search in the record office (I live in Essex),o I wonder if anyone in Derby, who may use the record office, could offer to check for me and see if there was a mention about the accident in the newspaper, and if possible, the names of the local newspapers, so that I could at least write to someone and ask for help?
Possibly the accident did not happen in Derby, but him being a resident, it may have been reported? in 1874 he lived with his family at Rose Hill St, Litchurch, so he may still have been at that address in 1876. He did travel around a lot, and when he retired still kept travelling, I suppose it had become a habit, in 81 he was in Scotland in Perth, then in 1890 he was in Birmingham, then appeared in the 1891/1901 census for East London, then he must have gone to live in Leicester, where he died in 1919.
If anyone can offer help, it would be so much appreciated, thank you

Hi Mars Barr,
Probably not much help here but I had great success by contacting The Magic Attic. They do lookups for a "donation" in the "Derby Mercury" archives.

Just email them to start the ball rolling.
Good luck Sandi

I can have a look in Beeston Gazette and Echo (near the Notts/Derbyshire border) and maybe Nottingham Evening Post. If it was serious enough it should be in these even if it was in Derby. I will get back to you later in the week. If anyone else finds the answer before then please let me know.
