Dabron Family
« on: Saturday 14 May 05 14:55 BST (UK) »

I have very little success with this family, many myths surrounded their 'history'.  I have only been able to locate a wife, Elizabeth (Clarke) Dabron entering Australia on board the Golden Era with 2 daughters in 1853.  Her husband was Thomas Hardy Dabron, his parents Robert Dabron and Ann Hardy.  Siblings, John, Rhoda, and Robert entered Australian pre 1850, but I am yet to confirm this.  While in Durham they seemed to move around, Norton, Billington, Wolverton feature in birthplaces.  Can anyone help me gather some additional information on them.

Abygail,

To perhaps ease the chore of sorting out those Dabron "events" of registration of births and marriages and Census appearances, here are some snippets on "places".

As a sort of admin centre for BMD Registrations and censuses, from 1837, Stockton-on-Tess ruled the roost over lots of the places mentioned above.

So from June 1837 any BMDs happening in Hartlepool, Billingham, Wolviston, Norton ( all those were Co Durham), Middlesbrough, Yarm and Thornaby,( these in the North Riding of Yorkshire) and Stockton.. were all registered within the District Registration of Stockton ( but it had sub-offices dotted around, including Hartlepool and Yarm)

Hartlepool got it's "independence" from Stockton and became a Registration District in it's own right from 1859.

Middlesbrough  Registration District was born out of Stockton in !875, taking with it Thornaby-on-Tees.

Also in 1875 , Yarm was switched from Stockton to Stokesley Registration District.

So before 1859, a birth registered within Stockton RD could have been at Stockton area, Hartlepool area , Middlesbrough area or Yarm area, etc.

After 1859 it could have been at Stockton area , Middlesbrough or Yarm area.

After 1875 it would only have been in Stockton's "own" area.

Ouch.

Thanks Michael,
No need to Ouch!  I am a novice when it comes to regions/areas in the UK, Scotland and Ireland.   All information, regardless how simplistic it may be to more knowledgable players expands my education.  and it helps me develop a mental picture as well.   I'm learning fast.

Abygail,

Maybe you have turned lucky !

1) I am a wee bit embarrassed at throwing all that heavy stuff at you yesterday ...... and...

2) although I am away from home ( Northumberland) I am in Darlington,( cat-sitting) which is close-ish to the Dabron territory, and has a library with good Fam Tree stuff and very helpful staff...

So this is what I picked up this morning.........

-------------------------------------------------------------

Census 1851 Piece 2383 Folio 849
Front Street, Norton. County Durham.

John Dabron head, 39 yrs, Market Gardener, born Norton.
Jane Dabron, wife 36, b.Scarborough, Yorkshire.
Rhoda Dabron, dtr, 9, b.Scarborough,   "     ,
Arthur Dabron, son, 7, b.Thwing, Yorkshire.
Elizabeth Dabron, dtr 6, b.   "   ,    "   ,
Robert Dabron, son 4, b.    "    ,    "    .
Sarah A Dabron, dtr 10 months, b.Norton

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Census 1851 2383-867
Norton ( close to Ragworth House) Co Durham.

Arthur Dabron, head, 42, widow*, gardener, b. Norton
Jane Dabron, dtr, 8, b. Norton.
Jane Dabron, sister, unmarried, 51, b.Norton
Rhoda Dabron, sister, 45 **, b.Norton
Eliza Jane Dabron, niece 10, b. Stockton.

------------------------------------------------------------

C1851 2384-63-20
Wolviston

Robert Dabron, head, 50, gardener, b.Norton
Ann dabron, wife, 49, b.Norton.
John Dabron, son, 12, scholar, b.Wolviston.
Jane Dabron, dtr 10, scholar, b.Wolviston.
Isabella Fletcher, grandaughter, 1, b.Hartlepool.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Census 1851 2383-332-40
California, Hartlepool, Co Durham

Henry Fletcher, head, 27, cartwright (Journ)***, b. Bishop Middleham, Co Durham.
Rhoda Fletcher, wife, 22, b. Wolviston.
William Surtees, visitor, unmarried, 25, stone mason (journ)***, b. Guisborough, Yorkshire.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Today Stockton, Norton, Billingham and Wolviston are all tied up together under Stockton.   Hartlepool is separate, a few miles farther north.

And it looks as though Dabrons are from Norton and are green-fingered.

*this was badly written but could have been "married" as well as "widow"

** Rhoda's marital status could have been either unmarried or married... I'll plump for unmarried.

*** " Jour or Journ, which is I think an abbreviation for "journeyman", implying they hired themselves out on a daily basis, rather than in a permanent capacity Huh

Plenty of Rhodas to get you teeth into !

A bit more....not much...

Trade Directories, published by various companies, held entries for ARTHUR DABRON, Market Gardener of Norton, Stockton-on-Tees, from at least 1851 to 1865.

Sometimes name was published as DEBURN and DEBRON, but mostly as DABRON.

Thank you every one,
I am starting to make some headway, the up side of a family reusing the same names over several generations is that it is a sure bet their all related.
I have now determined that Rhoda (Dabron) her husband, Henry Fletcher, their children along with Thomas Hardy Dabron and Robert Dabron(Debrone) sailed for Australia in 1852 and Elizabeth (Clarke)Dabron (wife of Thomas H Dabron) sailed with her daughters in 1853 to Australia.
Now that I have confirmed when the Dabron siblings left Durham and now have birth places and census records that confirm where they lived I'll be able to pursue info re their parents.  Ann Hardy and Robert Dabron.
I have conflicting info re the fathers' forename, some say Robert and others say John.   It is possible that Ann Hardy wed both over a period of time.
