I started researching my family tree around a year ago, I started with my gt grandfather John Henry Townrow. Going on advice my dad and I looked on family search on 1881 census and found nothing, we knew he had served in the army so took it that he had already signed up by then.
A few days later we managed to obtain his birth cirtificate when told us he was born in East Retford, Nottingham on 26th November 1860.
Last Sunday I went to visit his only surviving daughter who is aged 92 and thankful fit and in a good mental and physical health. We had already asked her if she could try and find some photos of her wedding and when her daughter went hunting for it found some army records and a death cirtifificate of JHT.
My father and I plan to look for his army records in early October but this was a great find. All it says on it is his number when he joined and when he left but we did not know this before.
Anyway it states that he joined the Army in 1883 and not before 1881 as we first thought, however he was not listed on the census so we would like to know where he was in 1881.
Could someone please look in 1881 census for East Retford, Nottinghamshire if they have it please. He would be aged 20 by then.
I would appriciate any help anyone can offer me!

I'm affraid that that is not the same person as my gt grandfather. For some reason he isn't on the census. The only other explination is that he was not in the East Retford area at the time but I can not begin to imagine where.
I could only ask for someone to search all of Nottingham's records but fear it is too much to ask anyone to do so.

I assume you have his parents details from his birth cert? Why don't you post those and maybe one of the other candidates is a better fit?
Be prepared for dates and places to be either wrongly transcribed or even mis-stated on the census returns.
I'll wait to hear before searching again

Like I said he was born 26 Nov 1860 in Knessall (nr East Retford, Nottingham), his father is listed as Willam and his mother Maria (formely Taylor).
Going from what I know William was born in 1833, Babworth and died 1911 East Retford. His wife Maria was born 1838, Ranby and died on 30 October 1910.
I have checked them out on 1881 census and the family does exsist, its just that John henry isn't on it and its part of a jigsaw I'm despirate to fill.
1881 Census in accordance to familysearch.org:

I am struggling to find him in 1861 too. There is an entry for a Wm TOWNROW farmer in Kneesal (?), wife Sarah and children, none of whom quite match:
John George b 1856 Alfred b 1860
I also tried Wales and the Channel Islands just in case. Will let you know if anything else emerges.

He actually (for the record) married Rebecca Carter in 1891 in India so he wern't married by then.
I have the census info (or what I need) for 1861 and 1871 but 1881 is missing and I would like to know where he was. According to my records he joined the army in 1883, two years after the census was taken, in 1891 and 1901 he was in India and in 1911 he was in Ireland.

Hi Paul
This is a mystery then - I can see why you are struggling.
One learning point - if youhave the details of other census returns and marriage date, could you put these in your original post? It really helps to elimainate some candidates if we know what you know!
The most likely explanation is that he was working away from home, visiting relatives or has been horribly mistranscribed! Do you know his mother's maiden name - sometimes enumerators get carried away with writing "dittoes" under the surname of the head of household, so he may have inadvertently been given their name.
I will have another look for you

As explained in the 1861 census that someone found his mother's maiden name was Taylor. I know that when he came back to England from Ireland after 1909 he lived at 18 Harrleston Street, Sheffield.
I doubt it very much but he might be there, that is one other place that I have listed for this family.
