Re: Surname COE « Reply #2 on: Tuesday 13 July 04 11:05 BST (UK) »
Just trying to get a little further back.
I have both John Coe and Mary West/Coe in the census for 1871 1881 and 1891.
I would like to find John Coe and/or Mary West (probably not married at this point) on the 1851 census.
I would like to find their marriage, which I have not been able to find in Civil Registration, but which I would guess would be in the early 1860s.
I would love to find their births/baptisms (John Coe <1834>, Mary West <1831>, which predate civil registration. I am too far away to visit Essex RO, and so will have to wait until IGI catches up on that area unless I can find someone researching the same family who lives that way.
Any help welcome!

Hi Jaq,
Thanks for all the hard work on my behalf - very grateful. I shall follow up the John Coe leads and see where that gets me.
I had already tried the Mary Isabel(la) West on Civ Reg, but there is no John Coe on the same page (I have done the search both ways), so I'm not going to stump up for a marr cert yet.
Thanks again,
Sue

Hi Sue Do you mean BMD, because both parties are not always listed on there. You can't assume that the other names are the people they married. I was told this last year, so when I found a name that I thought was mine, I sent for the cert with that ref and didn't put a spouse. When I got the cert it was the right one with the spouses name I wanted and she wasn't on the list. Sue

Hi,
Yes, I know what you mean about the page info, but my assumption has always been that both partners in a marriage are entered at the same time. If I do a check for John Coe for that time and place, I draw a blank, which strongly suggests that it's not 'my' Mary West (which is a fairly common name).
Thanks,
Sue

Hi I did a search on BMD for a marriage of George Hunter, 1881. This is what is brought up:
GARRETT John Islington 1b 488 GERHARD John Islington 1b 488 HUNTER George Islington 1b 488 MURRAY Sarah Ann Islington 1b 488 PRIEST Jane Islington 1b 488
I wanted Georges wife to be Jane Hunter. So I sent for the cert, and only put Georges name on it and when I got it back, it was Jane Hunter (nee Hunter) On the old records they didn't always put the spouses name.
