Francis Walsh
« on: Saturday 18 June 05 14:10 UTC (UK) »

Looking for Francis George Walsh, born in Cavan about 1861. Appeared on 1881 Census in Hunslet, Leeds, married my great grandmother and 'disappeared' by 1901. No death certificate found. Did he go back to Ireland. Any help appreciated.

Hello Perdu,

Search - Walsh, Ulster, Cavan
The result shows Walsh - head of household during the period 1848 - 1864

Thank you. A useful source but unfortunately, I don't know Francis' name. His mother, also born in Cavan, was called Elizabeth but was a widow by 1881.

Perdu, let's get this straight, the name of Francis' father is not known and the surname of his mother is not known.

What is your location Perdu. I assume you are not in Ireland

It's been some time since I looked at this site. Many thanks to you for replying and apologies for not replying.

I thought I would reply in some detail and ask if you have any ideas on how I could proceed. I've already scoured Ancestry.co.uk and 'googled' till my eyes are crossed.

You have got it right on both counts. I live in France and not in Ireland.

Secondly, I don't know the names of either of Francis' parents except that his mother was an Elizabeth Walsh born in Wicklow abt 1823. Francis George born in Cavan abt 1861, his brother James was born in 1858. They all appear in Hunslet, Leeds on the 1881 census but I cannot find any trace of them thereafter.

Francis married my gt. grandmother in 1884 and they had two daughters. The third daughter of the family, my grandmother was born in 1887. However, no father is named on her birth certificate. My gt. grandmother, describing herself as a widow, married again in 1893. I have not been able to find a registry entry of Francis George's death.

I'm left with several alternatives a) he went back to Ireland b) went to America c) died outside England d) died in England but the death was not registered or
e) he changed his name and went to live elsewhere in England.

If he did not die, then my gt. grandmother was a bigamist. I can live with this but would have liked to have known what happened to Francis as I will never know the name of my gt. grandfather.

Thank you again for responding to my message

Just started my search on this site...  My GGrandfathers name was Francis Walsh who was born 1866 (not confirmed yet)  I was sent a book from friend living in Arva C.Cavan the tells abit of the history of Arva.  In it I found 1901 census (partial)  My GGrandfathers name is in it.  I am having difficulties tracing where he originated from as well I don't know my GGrandmothers name nor maiden name.  I heard a story that they had 9 children mostly girls...  They raised my mother who was born in 1916. Would like to know if anyone else has any information on my family, Also looking for reliable sites that might provide some answers.  I know that one of my Great Aunts married a Jackson.  Much more but would like to speak privately to someone who may have known family living in Arva around 1901?

If you search here -> http://cavan.brsgenealogy.com/ for a Francis Walsh, you'll see an available baptism record for a Francis George Walsh in 1861. For 5 eur you can see an abstract of the record. (registering and indexing is free, btw)

1 match for the search criteria: walsh (plus variants) francis 1859-1867

Thank you very much indeed. I have looked at the site and got the details for Francis George Walsh. He was indeed the one who was married to my great grandmother Emily Learoyd.

The extra details are as follows: Baptised 10/3/1861 in Kilmore, Co. Cavan. Denomination: Church of Ireland.

Father: James Walsh. Mother: Elizabeth Walsh. Occupation: Butler.

I still don't know what happened to him after he was named as the father of my great Aunt Ethel in 1885. The father's name is absent on my grandmother's birth certificate in 1887. Emily married again in 1893.

The question remains: Did Francis, die,  acquire another name or leave the country. There is no trace of him on the 1891 or 1901 census and I have never been able to find a record of his death.

I'd be very greatful if anyone can come up with the answer.

I appreciate web site to check on Francis / and Francis Walsh 1901 census found with complete household members.  (Found under Arvagh,,,  Killashandra/Tullyhunco in Co Cavan.  This is my first tangible evidence that this was my GGreatfather.
Purchased Marriage certifcate for Francis WALSH ON 28/02/1870 to Rose Lee. Francis fathers name was Michael and Rose's fathers sname was Luke Lee. Lee's were from Shankill. They resided in Ballyhaise Co. Cavan and were RC
Any further recommendations of where I might trace Francis married to Susan BIRTH CERTIFICATES would be appreciated. This site is marvelous and addictive and makes one feel as though we are all Walsh's ! Ha  Booness

I am certainly learning as I scroll through thousands of Walshes!!!  Have a correction to my last message Thought Francis was married to a Rose lee.  This maybr true, BUT this is NOT my GGRANDFATHER Francis Walsh..  I found that my GG was married to a Susan Duffy in1885 in Arvagh Parish of Killeshandra Co. Cavan.  Census of 1901 shows Francis & Susan with family  of 8 Census of 1911 shows :Francis married to Susan Duffy for 27 years and that they had 13 children 8 living.  I have found baptismal certificates for only Michael who had a twin Sara (baptized privately) and John Joseph.  I'm thankful for this site.  Stay tuned haha Booness Shocked
