Hi,
I think that I may have found an ancestor who emigrated to America from the USA, but I'm not sure how to go about proving it is him.
I have a JOHN KIRK born c.1818 in Eastrington, East Yorkshire. From the birth of his one known son, Ferdinand, his wife was CHARLOTTE. I have lost this couple from the 1851 census onwards when their son was living with his grandparents. I had assumed that they had died, but am now wondering if I have found them on the 1880 U.S. census.
On the 1880 U.S. census for Paterson, Passaic, N.J., there is a John Kirk born c.1818 in England whose wife is Charlotte born England c.1819, and also a James Kirk born c.1842 England. The 1870 census for Paterson is on rootsweb and lists a John Kirk aged 53 and a James Kirk aged 27 both from England (no Charlotte mentioned). I've checked the IGI and there is a baptism in Coventry for a James Kirk in 1844 to John and Charlotte Kirk.
If this is my John Kirk he could have emigrated anytime between 1845 and 1870.
Can anyone suggest a way forward?
Regards, Sasha.

Hi Sasha Working backward from the 1870 US census, I looked at the 1860.
Roxbury Ward 2, Norfolk, Massachusetts Roll M653_517, Page 785
KIRK John, 42, born England, worker in Silk Factory Charlotte, 42, born England James, 16, born England, worker in Silk Factory Mary A 12 born England Sarah 6, b Mass. Eliza 2, b Mass.
So I had a look at the Immigration Index and found the following family: Arriving NY, 27 July 1852 on ship "Chace" Port of Departure: Liverpool Microfilm Roll 117, List #1020, Line 2
Name Age B'place Occup. Last Res. Allegiance KIRK John 30 Eng. Farmer Eng. Alien Charlotte 28 Eng. " " James 7 " " " Mary Ann 3 " " "
There is also an infant listed, age 6 months, but I am unable to read the inserted name: perhaps "John?"
I have no way of knowing if this is your family or not but thought perhaps you could sift through the information.
Regards, Valerie

Hi Valerie,
Thank you so much for looking up this information for me.
My Kirk family are farmers from the East Riding of Yorkshire so the occupation fits.
You've given me quite a bit to work with - I'll do as you say and sift through it all.
Thanks, Sasha.
