Hi Graham

This is the only Bass that I can see in Hitchin in 1851
Walsworth
John Bass head widower 56 carpenter b Maulden Beds
Mary Bass dau unm 32 grocer b Shillington Beds
Philip Bass son unm 21 miller b Hitchin
James Bass son unm 18 sawyer b Hitchin
Eliza Bass dau unm 16 straw plaiter b Hitchin
Samuel Bass son 11 straw plaiter b Hitchin

In 1861
Bancroft St, Hitchin
Mary Bass head unmarr 42 grocer born Shillington, Beds
John Bass father widower 70 carpenter labourer b Malden Beds
Eliza Bass sister unm 21 bonnet sewer b Walsworth Herts
Samuel Bass brother unm 19 carpenter labourer b Walsworth Herts

He'd aged badly as in 1871 he was an 83 year old carpenter born Maulden widower living with his son in law Henry Gardener 28 and daughter Eliza Gardener 30, grocer born Hitchin.

Regards

David

Thanks David, I'm pretty sure he's the right John Bass - Elizabeth must have died fairly young. See what you mean about his ageing - in contrast to daughter Eliza who only put on 5 years between censuses!

Graham
