Hello
Just wondering if any one has any info or knows anything on the following Hinchliffe / Hinchliff / Hinchcliffe / Hinchcliff family (I've seen every spelling of the same family group on the census through 1841 - 1901 and on the certificates). They were all coal miners.
George Prince Hinchliffe born 1876 Allerton Bywater married Joyce Willis in 1906 in Allerton Bywater married Amy Durham in 1918 in Allerton Bywater died 1954 in Allerton Bywater he was the son of:
William Henry Hinchliffe born 1846 in Overton / Shitlington (Parish of Thornhill) married Sarah Prince in 1867 in Allerton Bywater died 1921 in Allerton Bywater he was the son of:
John Hinchliffe born in 1820s somewhere around Thornhill, possibly Overton, married Jane Lee in 1842 Dirtcar / now called Durkar died in Allerton Bywater in 1866 - probably
I'm pretty stuck at this level the marriage certificate of John and Jane says they married in Dirtcar, Sandal - which was in an unexpected place, unless I have the wrong certificate. A death certificate I have for John, puts him in Allerton Bywater - died in 1866 at the colliery - killed by a cage. This is probably him, though the age is a year out to the census, and it doesnt mention any family, it was done by the coroner, so I can't be 100% sure I have the right certificates.
Any help or info would be appreciated Thanks
Chris Hinchliffe

Don't know that it will help your research but Thornhill is not that far from Wakefield and Durkar is on the outskirts of Wakefield. There was a big colliery at Crigglestone the next village to Durkar and it could be that your ancestor met his wife whilst working at that pit. Miners seemed to move around the area as a seam was worked out in the pit they were working in, so he maybe moved.

Hi Chris
Just looked at the IGI (Hugh Wallis' batch number site) for Thornhill by Dewsbury.
Quite a slew of Hinchliffes, but only three John's showing as christened / born in the 1820's:
JOHN HINCHCLIFF - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 24 OCT 1819 Thornhill By Dewsbury, Yorkshire JOHN JACKSON HINCHLIFFE - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 13 APR 1823 Thornhill By Dewsbury, Yorkshire JOHN HINCHLIFFE - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 01 MAR 1829 Thornhill By Dewsbury, Yorkshire
Can't find William as the records cease in 1845. Do you know any of his siblings (particularly if born before 1845!) as this might help locate his parents?
cheers
Paul

Thanks Nessie and Paul E
I've looked at the maps of the area and I realise they are close, I suppose people did move around, as I have other ancestors that were constantly moving around.
I've checked the IGI a few times, not many, if any of the John Hinchliffes that crop up fit the bill as their parents don't match the father that I think is his. If I have the correct wedding certificate, John's father was Samuel, none that I can find appear in the IGI. According to the census info and his death certificate, he was born around 1821-23.
Thanks for your help
Chris

hi Chris here is a little nugget for you.
Arthur Scargill of NUM fame is descended from the Thornhill Scargills as are the Hinchcliffes
Looks like we may be related in some way!

PS
William had an older brother called Jonathan born around 1844 He was 7 on the 1851 census living at Overton and probably born there, as was William He was 17 in 1861 census in Castleford with the others Then he disappears from the census
