From freebmd I can see that there is a possible marriage of George HOWELLS & Mary COUND in the June qrt of 1874 - Registration District of Forden.
Before I send for a marriage certificate - does anyone recognise this couple?
Mary COUND was born in Pontesbury in 1853 - her parents were William & Martha . I know nothing yet about George HOWELLS's parentage - except that he was born in England in about 1852.

Checking the 1881 census, I can't see a Mary HOWELLS b. c1853 Pontesbury (or similar) with or without husband George. However, there is this family with a good match for Mary:

John HUFFER - Head - 38 - Farm Servant - Condover, Shropshire
Mary HUFFER - Wife - 29 - Pontesbury, Shropshire
Alice HUFFER - Dau - 6 - Scholar - Stapleton, Shropshire
William HUFFER - Son - 1 - Scholar - Stapleton, Shropshire
John William HUFFER is the other male listed on the same page as Mary COUND and George HOWELLS in 1874:
Marriages Jun 1874 (>99%)
COUND Mary
HOWELLS George
HUFFER John William
PURSLOW Jane
Forden 11b 361
I think, therefore that Mary COUND married John HUFFER, and George HOWELLS married Jane PURSLOW.

Thank you for your interest.
I too had wondered whether George HOWELLS might have married Jane PURSLOW.
But I do know that a George & Mary HOWELLS arrived in New York 28 Oct 1879 on board the Steamer "England" which had sailed from Liverpool. (Which is why you can't find them in this country on the 1881 census)
Next to them on the Passenger List was a Martha COUND who I believe to be Mary's sister-in-law, who was joining her husband, William COUND.
Just to confuse matters Martha's maiden name seems to be PURSLOW!

Thanks for all your help - it's good to get a second opinion.
Just wondered if anyone else was researching the HOWELLS family 'cos I can't immediately see George on earlier censuses. The marriage should give his father's name (provided he had one!)
