Prison Hulks Lookup
« on: Sunday 05 June 05 12:47 BST (UK) »

Hi All,

I am researching a convict that was placed onto the prison hulk "Laurel" on 7th June 1801 and remained there until September 1802. Can anyone tell me where I can find this information, or if anyone has it, would they mind doing a lookup for me?

The convicts name was Stephen Wain (Waine) and he was tried at the Derby assizes on 4th March 1801, convicted on 26th March 1801 and taken to the prison hulk on 7th June 1801. He was charged and convicted for stealing 18guineas and 7shillings from Joseph Webster of Chesterfield.

Regards and Thanks

The prison hulk records are in The National Archives
The earliest register in HO 9 8 for the Laurel at Portsmouth - starts in 1801
I think the other possible records are past the period you are interested in
HO 9 9 Laurel - starting circa 1805
In prison hulks quarterly returns in T 38 318 the first starts in 1804.
The quartely prison hulk returns in HO 8 don't start until the 1820s

There will be further information in the TNA online search guides
I doubt HO9  8 records have been microfilmed so to view them you would need to visit the TNA or employ a researcher who knows something about convict records, because there will be other records besides the hulk records Stephen can be tracked through at the TNA particularly if he was transported (if he went anywhere near Van Diemens Land the records in Tasmania are ver good).

Thanks Marionoops,

It did give me insight into the type of life that Stephen would have led. What an amazing man he must have been to survive a year onboard a prison hulk in those kind of conditions, then survive for 169 days onboard a convict hulk to come to Australia, and survive the hardships of early convict days here.  Shocked

Thanks also to you Valda,

Sheeesh.....I so would like to know more about him. Such a pity that I cannot get to The national Archives to look up Stephen. I would give anything to be able to go there and spend a month looking through everything I can get my hands on about stephen!!! but unfortunately paying for someone else to look is not something I am able to do either  Embarrassed
but i sincerely thank you both for all the help. Valda I have made notes on the information you have given me regarding the "Laurel"...  Kiss

Many records held in The National Archives have been microfilmed and are available in Australia.
Of all the Australian convicts I researched the best and most informative records were held in Tasmania and not here.
You would be unlikely to find much in the hulk convict registers if anything at all that you couldn't find in Australian records.

Are you able to give me an email or street address to contact the places in Tasmania and New South Wales to ask? Because according to the State Library of NSW, they have nothing on prison hulks, just the arrivals of 1788 onwards which I already have.
Thanks for the info.

I doubt they will have microfilms of the prison hulk registers themselves - the point I am making is they are unlikely to supply you with any further details than the records in Australia (whether microfilmed records in the TNA or Australian records themselves). Just date and place of trial, arrival and leaving date (and where to from there) and a brief description of the prisoner if you are lucky. What else did a prison hulk need to record? The register is likely to contain the one line of detail on prisoners as they came and went. For their purposes they didn't need to record anything further. 1801 is the watershed for any records surviving from these hulks (and not necessarily from January 1st 1801). The concept of keeping more detailed records is only just beginning and as these were criminals who were not going anywhere (except out of the country) you didn't need modern day records such as next of kin - something I have only seen on Tasmanian criminal records, and that was for a later date.
For microfilmed records of TNA records you probably need also to check SAG - I think I'm correct in the initials Society of Australian Genealogists? They can help you with what is available and what they also hold. The Tasmanian records will be at the record office in Hobart (try a Google search).
