Can anyone help with the best place to position meta tags? I placed mine in the heading after the title but I then lost my background to my site!!  Huh Huh
Berlin Bob and Keith....Don't ask!!  I think I'm turning into one of those people who has a highly developed skill for finding the wrong way of doing things!! Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
Rather then referencing everything I have put an annotated bibliography in as a separate page. It sort of turned into a helpful page for basic sites for anyone starting out. I don't want to generate any problems with copyright. Could some more qualified than me have a look at it and check that I'm not treading on anyone's toes. I don't want anything to reflect on Rootschat!
I have referenced the census page on the page.
Just when you thought I'd gone quiet!! Grin

Hi Jocie,

That was the right place :

on my site I have them in this order, but I don't really know if it makes a difference:
<head>
   <title>A Margulies Miscellania</title>
   <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
   <meta name="author" contents=".........    ">
   <meta name="copyright" contents=".........    ">
   <meta name="date" contents="2005-02-10">
   <meta name="description" contents="Family Chronicles of the Margulies-Remenyi, Benson-Kennedy, Stevenson-Ferrie and Coleman-Moore-Breeze Families (and others)">
   <meta name="keywords" lang="en" contents="Family History,Genealogy">
   <meta name="keywords" contents="Benson,Baxter,Breeze,Coleman,Ferrie,Hoey,Gardner">
   <meta name="keywords" contents="Hopes,Kennedy,Lewis,Margulies,Malacek,Margoliot,Moore,Morrison">
   <meta name="keywords" contents="Morser,Pearse,Remenyi,Richards,Riding,Stevenson,Vachre,Vatcher">

   <meta http-equiv="Content-Style-Type" content="text/css">
   <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="./mm-scr.css" media="screen">
   <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="./mm-prn.css" media="print">
</head>

But check out Keith Bateman's thread, too: Congratulations Rootschat Webspace!!

especially replies #6 - #9 for some comments about "keywords"

Hi again,

just had a look at your site, in particular, the sources page:  nothing wrong there !!

I particularly liked your description of the last site:

Quote
Very easy to navigate, extremely helpful and fun. I have gained so much from the members of this site, not just information but also guidance on what to do and where to look.. Without their support and encouragement this website would still be a distant dream. That or the computer would have gone out of the window!!

Hi Jo,

Bob just beat me to it - I put mine after the Title Page - not sure why - had a look at some other sites and copied them!!

Mine does work as I have just had another contact who found my site thro a search engine - but it most probably could be better!!

I like your census page - don't know anything about copyright laws - but as you collected ALL the information yourself it should be OK!!  Grin Grin

If I put mine on like that I think it would fill a few more pages!!

You start to do more things that are absolutely necessary - and yours is coming on well - when I looked thro your source page I realised what a lot of different places we all visit!

As Bob says - don't go "quiet" - let us know what's going on - good or bad!!  Grin

Cheers

Keith

Just remembered seeing this comment on copyright :

Copyright Notice from the PRO: "You may transcribe, use and publish the information so long as you acknowledge the PRO as the source and give the appropriate document reference."
(the appropriate document reference being the piece/folio and page number)

at: 1901 Census Leftovers Site  http://1901census.rootschat.com

so if you know any of the "piece/folio and page numbers" you could add them as well !

Bob, Keith,
Thanks for the help.
Keith, I had peeped at your meta-tags as you use the same system, Second Site and Front Page. But when I put mine in the same place I lost the background!!. Roll Eyes
It must be me...or the heat.
I'm working tomorrow and Tuesday so I'll try again on Wednesday.
Don't worry I won't go too quiet...I've got a reputation to keep up!! I make the errors for others to learn from Grin Grin
Thanks for the advice about the sources page I thought it just might help others.
As for the census Keith that's only one branch of my lot loads more lurking in the background

Thanks Bob
I'm grateful for that.
Piece Folio and Page number will be added.
I'm quite happy writing essays with all appropriate sources and bibliography etc. I just feel it's a bit over the top to put that much on here. I think that's what worries me. I don't want to take  short cuts and generate problems for Rootschat.
