William Clarke b Lumley abt1808
« on: Sunday 19 June 05 20:48 BST (UK) »

Hi
I'm looking for info on William Clarke, coal miner, born (acc to 1851 census) Lumley. married Margaret Oliver in Feb 1832 at Houghton-le-spring. Lived Coxhoe & East Hetton in 1841 census.

I have three possibles for his birth.
(1) b 2 June 1809, christened 20 August 1809 Houghton, parents Robert Clark and Margery Harland (who also had son Robert in July 1812, and were married Washington 1808 according to Joiner)
(2) b 14 Oct 1809, christened 10 Dec Chester-le-Street, to Richard Clarke and Ann Ivison
(3) (less likely - too far from Lumley) b 15 Jun 1809 Chr 2 Jul 1809 St Margaret, Durham parents William Clarke and Mararet McIntyre.

What I'd like help with is to sort out whether his stated birthplace of Lumley in 1809 would have been the Chester-le-Street option above, or the Houghton one??

I'd appreciate any advice anyone can give on this (or on the Clark(e)s of the area at about that time
Thanks

What names does he give his children?   They are frequently named after grandparents.   Is this from the IGI or have you checked the parish records yourself?   Durham was not well covered by the IGI originally though it might be better now.  According to my copy of Phillimore Great Lumley is not transcribed by the LDS church which will mean a search of the original.

"This parish was formed in 1862 from that of Chester-le-Street, and comprises the townships of Great and Little Lumley.

We have trancribed the burials for Chester le Street up to 1813 and at that time Lumley was part of the Chester le Street parish

Who are "we" and where are the transcripts?  Can anyone search them?  What about births?  Is there a transcript?

Thanks for the suggestions: I guess I need to find the record of william's birth, which is hard from Australia.  Tried looking at the children'snames, but nothing definite there (william had 10, and that covers a bit of ground). A further complication is that when he married Margaret Oliver in 1832, there is no record of parents - best bet for her birth is 1815, but my guess is that when they married, she stated her age as 21 ie. born 1811 or earlier.

If anyone is able to help with a look-up of

(a)  birth record for william clark (1809, "lumley" from census, possibly christened chester-le-street 10 dec 1809), and
(b) william clarke and margaret oliver m 18 feb 1832 houghton-le-spring,

I would be very grateful.
Thanks

That is a lucky post as actually I do have ancestors from Chester le Street.   Dorothy Robinson bap 28 Feb 1790, who married Francis Sill in St Nicholas Durham in 1807.   Her parents were Matthias Robinson and Frances Martin who I believe was the daughter of John Martin and Frances Curry who married 30 June 1747.    This research was all done years ago - before the advent of the internet - and I have it on scrappy bits of paper written out by my Dad, who died ten years ago.
Any reference to the above names would be brilliant.
Many thanks for the offer.
