Murdoch's in Aberdeen
« on: Wednesday 22 June 05 03:04 BST (UK) »

Hi All,

I have come to a bit of a brickwall... I'm searching for the parents of David Murdoch, born abt 1808.. give or take a couple of years. His father's name may of been Alexander (if he has followed the traditional naming patterns for his children). I'm new to Scottish Genealogy so don't know what sort of records are around. He was put on trial in Aberdeen and sent to Aust around 1829.

Any help on finding his parents would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Kind Regards
Bronwyn

I didn't find a birth in Aberdeen. were you assuming he was form there becuae of his trial or for another reason?I did check both Scotlands people and LDS.

On LDS it lists 24 possibles. Ayrshire, Lanark, Fife, Midlothian and Moray.

None of those had a father called Alexander.
Do you have anything else about him that would help find him?
Have you located anything about his trial?

Hi Amanda,

Thanks for looking at both LDS and scotlands people. I don't have much else to go on, his first two daughters were Isabella and Grace, so his mothers name may be one of those as well.  My mother in-law has been trying to locate him for some years. He was tried at the Old Bailey I think it was called, we have a lot of info on him from the time he came to Aus, but not much beforehand. She thinks he may of come from Banff for some reason, not exactly sure why that is. We haven't located his trial records. He came out on the Layton in 1829...

Thanks again for looking.

David apparently went to the Bridewell on Vagrancy charges around 1824, he would of been 13 or 14 at the time.  Does anybody know if these records could be easily located. I had a look on the NAS, through the catalog, but couldn't find anything that would point me to his record of his vagrancy charges... I did however find his entry for his theft records which were in 1829. Contrary to what I thought we do have these, however we are looking for his vagrancy records which his trial records refer to.... it insinuates there may be more data about where he came from in it.

Don't know if this might help, but worth a look!
