1868 Inquest Ulverston

I recently received the death cert for my GGG Grandfather John Gorrill Pearson age 45. It states that he was "Found dead Ulverstone sixteenth October 1868" Cause of death is "Unknown" and informant is "Wm. Butler Coroner for the Liberty of Furness. Inquest held seventeenth October 1868".

Where would I locate more information about the inquest and how could I locate the place he was buried? I understand that the public cemetery was not in existance in Ulverston 1868 so it would most likely be in a churchyard.

Hi Barbara,
I've not had experience with obtaining coroners' records, but I was able to obtain a newspaper article reporting on the inquest of an ancestor, by contacting the local records centre (Lambeth, south London) and asking which papers would be most likely to have the information.  They were then able (for a small fee) to provide me with copies of the article.  I was also lucky enough to find three articles in the Times Digital Archive (website - I don't have the ref right now) about the death, because it was caused by an explosion and subsequent house fire.
I would recommend contacting the records centre relevant to the place of death, and seeing what they have.

Thanks for that - I'll take a look at the Times Digital Archive and perhaps contact the local record office in Barrow and see what they can suggest.

The library in Barrow hold copies of newspapers covering Ulverston.

One of my relatives died young there and I expected it to be a workplace accident, so I found out where the papers were.

When the cert arrived I found he died of TB, so I haven't bothered searching for any other description.

Hi Barbara:
My grgrgrandfathers death certificate stated that there was an inquest in to his death. He died in Barrow in Furness. I contacted the record office and they sent me the newspaper articles about it.
He fell off a horse and hit his head on the sidewalk.

Well, Barrow Records Office came up trumps! They managed to find a report in "Soulby's Ulverston Advertiser", 22 October 1868 which stated that he was found outside Mr Taylor's brush maker's shop by a sixteen year old youth, Thomas Johnson. Witnesses testified that he had not appeared to be "in drink" the previous evening and police found no signs of foul play. The jury returned a simple verdict of "Found Dead".
Who knows, maybe he had a heart attack or an aneursim - I'll never know. Huh
