Aldred confusion!
« on: Saturday 25 June 05 14:41 BST (UK) »

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can help me regarding a few of my ancestors.
My GGGrandmother was Ellen Alldred b. 1861 in Horsley Woodhouse/Heanor. Her parents were Richard b. 1821 and Sarah b. 1831. on the 1871 census it records them and their other children, Amy b. 1858, Elizabeth, and Walter b. 1859  but a Charles Cowlishaw b. 1854 as their son in law, but non of those children are married!
On the 1861 census they have a Charles Alldred b. 1853, and a William Cowlishaw and Sarah Alldred boarding with them!
I am really confused! I don't know if Charles is an Alldred or a illegitimate Cowlishaw!!!
It also states there is an Anny Alldred b. 1857, but I think this has been mistaken for Amy.
Can anyone check who the parents of Charles are?! He was born in Heanor in both cases.
Thanks for your time.

Did you find Richard and Sarah's marriage to see if she was a Cowlishw at marriage? Son-in-law can stand for stepson as far as I am aware.

Hi again Burto,

It seems that Charles was indeed the illegitimate son of Sarah Cowlishaw, there is a record of his baptism on the Heanor St. Lawrence Church parish records.  Here's a link -
