Personal messages- gone to the moon??
« on: Saturday 25 June 05 20:37 BST (UK) »

Help - I am going crazy.

I receive Email notification that I have a personal message on Rootschat.

On Rootschat I have the indication in the top right hand corner that I have 1 new message waiting.

Good so far - then I click on the new message, the 1 turns to a zero and there is no new message recorded.

My pop ups are set to allow pop ups on Rootschat.

Anyone know what is happening Huh Huh Huh

Thanks, Tricia

Update
Have just deleted a couple of messages and the two missing ones popped up.

Is there a limit as to how many messages you can keep??

there usually is a limit on these types of boards regarding PM type messages but if I remember rightly Rootschat set it fairly high.
How many do you hold ?

I had 390 at the time I wasn't receiving new ones. I have deleted a few and am now receiving new messages.

However the deletion process isn't working very well. either Undecided

Shocked  I knew they had set a high limit I didn't expect anything like that high. ......you may have to do some serious pruning to get the system back on track.

That's something I'd wondered about - if none of us delete our PM's does it gum up the works and make RootsChat more cumbersome and maybe slower?

To read your messages click on the bit that tells you how many messages you have:

Hello, Username, you have 345 messages, 0 are new.

On some computers (depending on how the pop-up blockers are set up) then clicking the "OK" when the popup tells you that you have a new message will not take you to your messages. (I know Sarah's computer behaves like that).

Newcommers to RootsChat do have a limit on Personal Messages.

Other users do not have a limit, and it doesen't matter if you keep all your personal messages one bit. (It's a good idea to clear out the less important stuff though so that you can find things a bit easier)

I'll have a look at the "delete" problem  Roll Eyes

Hm, I think I should have that engraved in large letters Trystan!
My mother had an untidy house but neat cupboards and her mother had a spick and span house but the type of cupboards where you opened the door and dodged quickly before it all fell on you.
I think I got the worst bits of both Embarrassed

Hi Gardener

I couldn't help smiling as I read your message.  Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin
My mother had tidy everything, my grandmother somewhat untidy everything. I inherited the grandmother's traits. I have 258 PMs - the thought of sorting them out is rather like thinking about my cupboards - never do today what can wait until tomorrow.

many thanks for the smiles

Maybe it would make sense to deal with PMs exactly as if they were e-mails - which they are, really !

You can't put them in folders, but I copy and paste any important ones I want to keep, delete the PM, and keep the data locally on my computer. Any Hi/Bye PMs I delete after I've dealt with them, and every so often I look through the others and delete some.

I don't know if the server slows up generally, when there are so many PMs, but the disks will certainly get full at some time or other, and if you have lots of PMs and want to find a particular one, then that will certainly take more time.

This thread tackles a similar theme: What do you do with your emails?

Bob

ps: incidently, we're talking about "neat and tidy" PMs and e-mails, but what about the rest of the house ??

Ah Bob, but we know they are safe stored in Rootschat .............. anything can happen with the PC  Wink

Saying that, I do only keep the ones that have information relating to my own research  I delete others as soon as they are dealt with and the personal ones (not very many) when I have copied the relevant notes into a tree or onto paper Grin
