Vessel "Continent" in NYC May 19, 1854
« on: Saturday 25 June 05 20:03 UTC (UK) »

Hi there!  I've done my homework ---

What I know:
The "Continent" was owned by Tapscott Lines based in New Bedford, MA USA.
They had agents in London and NYC and were somewhat notorious in their dealing with the unwary.
I know ALL the specs of the Ship -- her construction, her tonnage, her masts, who built her, who her Captains were and the Captain's wives and children.
I know she was in NY harbor on May 19, 1854 w/ 548 passengers originating from L'pool
And that May 19, 1854 was a record setting day for traffic and immigration in NYC.

What I don't know:

Was she in NY Harbor anyother time during the year of 1854?

Where can I find the Passenger Lists?!

Many many thanks for any help!!!

Kathy

That is PERFECT except it's for the "Continent" in 1851!

I'm looking for 1854!  But keep looking Annie --  that's a beautiful list if same can be found in the right year.

I'm not shotgunning on the year here --  have very specific information that 1854 is correct.

There's some problem with 1854 ---  seems to be a gap with every ship/Ship Co.  in a block of time which includes 1854.
Not another fire/flood, I hope!

Thanks again,
Kathy

Hi ChattyKathy,

I happened upon a Rootsweb message of yours concerning the vessel 'Continent' and am quite excited to contact you about her.

One of my ancestors traveled aboard the ship 'Continent' from Liverpool to New York in 1851. I'm looking for whatever info there may be describing the ship. I'm also looking for a picture or drawing of her. I've been looking for some time on the Internet and have come across some of the info I believe you may have (Tapscott line, Capt. Drummund, built in Maine - I think). Though there isn't much out there.

I'd be very interested to see what you've found out about the ship and whether you have a picture.

If it's not too much trouble, I hope to hear from you,

Best wishes,

Jeffcity

You might want to check the free online project to fill in the 1847-1892 index gap for passenger arrival records in New York.

This project consists of 3 sets of records:

1. NY Times extracts for ship arrivals and passenger names

2. Images (and some accompanying transcripts) of actual passenger lists in this time period

3. NY Almshouse records for 1855-1858 (contains year of arrival and ship name)

The complete index of NY Times years and shipping news extracts is at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/nytimes.htm

Images of ships passenger lists for these Unindexed NY years are online at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/

The Almshouse Records start at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/ny_alms1855.htm

Also check online ships and links to ships in this time period starting att
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tousa_ny182549.shtml

Also see PRE Castle Garden (which didn't begin til 1855) at http://www.stevemorse.org/
