Yes, There was a pub call Greyfriars Inn in Allhallows, near the bus station, now housing a bank. But this may be a moderm equivalent. What date range are you thinking about ?    cheers John

Hi John
Thanks for your reply.
It would of been the 1950's and 1960's my Uncle was the Landlord.

Timberman,  I'm thinking of 'The Greyfriars' public house that was built as part of the then 'new' bus station development in the early '60s.

I have a few Kelly's directories of Bedford, It is not listed in the 1959 edition, & first appears in 1961 being just before Thurlow Street. In 1963 further shops are now appearing especially next door is the Carousel record shop where you could get 3 top ten singles for a pound. The pub is still there in 1976 but I cannot recall when it closed.

......... however I think you are referring to it's predecessor, a picture of which appears in Richard Wildman's book Bedford - A pictorial history. The photo shows the pub c 1955. The text says 'It's sucessor of the same name occupied the south corner of Allhalows Lane with Thurlow Street until demolished in 1990 after being sold by Charles Wells to NatWest Bank'

I'll try & scan it this evening

Timberman,

In the 1949-50 Kellys, Herbert Cecil Chadwick is listed at 22 Allhallows Lane, The Greyfriars Inn, Beer Retailer

At that address in 1940 is the Live & Let Live PH, Mrs Ethel M Hall

Back to 1936 it's George Leppard, Beer retailer

Thanks John

Brillant, I find the name of his pub,
you give me a photo and his middle name. Always knew him as Uncle Jack.
Never knew his middle name, so thank-you.
He was in the IstBn the Bedfordshires pre war and then again from 1939-
So became a landlord straight after the war.

Thanks again for your help.
