Hi, Just wondering if anyone could help me. I'm trying to find the parents of Selina(h) Smith b. 1852 in Mansfield. Her Grandmother was Ann Hingley according to the 1861 census. Any info on her parents would be greatfully received. Thanks for your time.

Can anyone tell me what N=P stands for? She was born in Mansfield but on another source I have her down as Selina Frances rather than Agnes? Also is there a marriage for Thomas and Ann? I'm a bit puzzled because I can't find them on the 1881 census either considering they had their last kid 12 years previously? Thanks.

Hi Heather, Thanks for that. Selina got married in December 1871, so maybe her moving down to Nottingham was how she met her husband?I wonder if the Hingley's were from Devonshire? I know the Widow's mentioned but it's a long way for a pre marriage relationship! How interesting. And Roman Catholics?! My Grandmother was C of E! What is interesting is the Harriett mentioned...I know Selina had a sister called Harriett and this one was born in Mansfield too? All the others even James were born Duffield..they must have been back and forth! Out of interest, where does Selina appear in the 1861? Just had a look where St. Alkmunds is and it's in Duffield too so it must be the right Thomas and Ann with this Duffield connection. Many thanks.

OK, now I'm convinced. Joseph seems to have married the Mary from the 1871 above (Heathr's post).

Sorry for appearing thick but can you explain where my ancestors come into this? I'm confused! Also why hasn't Selina appeared in the 1861 family? She'd only be 9 so she should be on there? So Joseph Hingley was Selina's uncle and she lodged with her aunt in 1871? Also Enoch and Alice aren't mentioned on that baptism record? Thanks.

Hi Burto,
you already told us yourself that Selina was with grandmother Ann Hingley in 1861 ...or that's how I read it
I suppose we're lucky they baptised any of their children! By the time they got round to it 1868/9, I'm guessing a fair few of the children had already flown the nest

Yes I know, that's what I mean, why would Selina go and live with her Grandmother when the other kids were still at home? And why would Sarah Ann get baptised but not Alice? So Ann Smith remarried in 1871 to a Shaw and Selina lived with her uncle..is that right?! Have I got it?! I'm having trouble keeping up...seems like they were all over the place! It's like an episode of Eastenders! So Selina's mother, Ann's father was Thomas Hingley born in Duffield and her father Thomas Smith was born in Bilston Staffs? Phew! Wonder where the trip to Wales came from?! Thanks for all your help. Any reason why they travelled around so much? All my other ancestors seem to have stayed in one place for a few generations?
