VINES, CROSS & HARROLD surnames
« on: Monday 27 June 05 00:05 BST (UK) »

I am researching these names, all with links to Northants and Rutland in the 18th/19th century.

Many of the VINES(VYNES/VINE) families lived in the villages near  the A43. The CROSS family lived in and around Cottingham and the HARROLD family were in the corn milling trade in Welford and elsewhere across the north of the county.

If anyone else has an interest or information on these names I would love to hear from them. I have much, but not all, of the GRO stuff on them and also most of the 1861 -1901 census info as well. It is the earlier stuff that is of interest.

cheers

Tony

Hi Annette

Thanks for responding and for the details of your Harrold line. This is my wife's family name.

I did some digging on the names you mention and the only John of that rough date I could find was in the 1861 and 1871 censuses on Ancestry.com. A John Harrold is listed as the son of John Harrold (b.1822) and Jemima. John snr. was born in Welford and was a miller so it sounds like the same family line as my wife's. John and Jemima's  family was Sarah C (b.1847 Doddington); Mary A (b.1849);John (b.1856 ish) and Elizabeth A (1858).

I then found on FreeBMD the marriage of John to Emily Francis (not Emma) in 1878 and the birth of William in 1880 followed by the latter's marriage to Kate Ingram and the birth of Herbert William in 1904. I cannot find any of the above names on the 1881/1891 and 1901 censuses yet which is rather strange! Also I cannot be certain that the John who married Emily is the same John who appears in the census but they match superficially.

Your John is not the one I seek but he could well be a close cousin.

If you'd like to follow this up it might be useful to use normal email. I'd certainly be interested in what prime documents you have for your tree as they may throw light on my research too. What do you think?

regards

Tony

Hi thanks for prompt reply re the Harrold family, i've printed off some lists from the 1861 & 1871 census forms, and indeed some welford based harrolds came to live in northampton town, i wonder if these all tie in together, any more info you could provide would be great you can email me at Moderator Comment: email address removed to prevent spam and other abuses.
