? registration birth & death
« on: Wednesday 29 June 05 09:28 UTC (UK) »

Could anyone tell me please if a baby was stillborn around 1900's would it be registered as just a death?
would it be registered as a birth & death if it lived just a few hours?
My Grt Grandmother told my Grandmother ( when she was a little girl) that she had a sister named Ina & a brother named James. Her first child was born in 1896 in Glasgow & my Grandmother was born the end of 1898  in Salford. She also had another son born 1901. Her husband deserted her in 1904. I can't find births ot deaths in Glasgow or Salford at these times that fit in with the other births. I have found in Salford under deaths         Robertson   Female 0 yrs.
Any help would be appreciated

I can only go off a relatives experience

if a baby was born stillbirth no registration of
birth or death exists,  therefore the baby is not
allowed to be buried in consecrated land.

If the baby takes at least one breath, then  this
is a live birth, and therefore the above does
not apply.

The time I am talking about is the 1930s-1940s
so I would suppose earlier the same would
apply.

I think the above principles differ today.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. I was talking to someone at the records office & he says it is one of those situations that can differ. Some registered the birth as a live birth & also a death but others would just register a death or not register at all.
Horrible as it sounds, I have been told that when very poor families  had a stillbirth, the "midwife" just took the body away & disposed of it!
