McBurnie's of Barrow-in-furness
« on: Monday 27 June 05 04:37 UTC (UK) »

connected names -spouses of my McBurnie = Whitehouse, Hanna, Gibson, Partington
The last ive found of them is the 1901 census. I understand the ship yards shut down  in early 1900's so they,ve moved someplace else. I know they dident imigrate to canada. Anyone have any idea were they might have gone for work at that time. Im looking for living relitives

There is still a shipyard in Barrow, though it employs many fewer people than of old. It was part of the Vickers group and now part of BAe Systems. Britain's nuclear submarines were built there.

If your relatives did move away early in the 1900s I'd expect them to head east to Lancaster for the oilcloth factory or north to the Whitehaven area for work in coal or iron mining.

My gggf's children were born in Barrow, Lancaster, Lancaster and Ulverston. He was in Barrow at the census just before the birth of the third child. I reckon he used the railway to move house.

Thanks for the info Andrew. Its quit possible they went to either of those places but they were craft tradesman. I would think they would try to stick to there craft. My ancesters seem to always be around ships , as Masters, cabinet makes , fitters carpenters ect ect . What other Places were Big with Ship Building at that time.

Tom
My ancestor also worked in the ship building industry (Boilermakers) also in Barrow in the early 1900`s.
My ancestors move in 1900 to Belfast (Harland & Wolfe) then on to America 1905 to work at the River Flow shipyard in Massachusetts

The next nearest area would probably be Liverpool and Birkenhead. Rail connections would not be difficult. Next most likely would be Teesside (Middlesbrough) Tyneside (Newcastle/Gateshead), but the journey there would be a bit more complicated. I think that smaller yards such as Whitehaven were in decline before then.

Expert woodworkers might find employment at Waring and Gillows of Lancaster - very sought-after furniture.

Metalworkers could probably find employment in the many foundries of any town in the north of England. Loads of mill machinery to build and maintain. Plenty of work for a good riveter too with all those boilers in use.
