Hi Mable, Will do look up, with pleasure, but need more information. Duffield, was and still is, a village in Derbyshire. However for 400+ years it was the only church were the surrounding villages could marry etc. I have checked the bpts. of the children you list which all took place at Duffield, this does not mean they lived in Duffield. Also James Bpt. 6.8.1815 is shown on IGI as the Son of Septimus Dawson & Phillis, the rest are shown as the children of Septimus Dawson & Alice. (could be IGI is incorrect) Alice b 1820 married Henry Ward 18.3.1845 Mary Ann married Joseph Wheatley 3.5.1852 These marriages took place in Duffield. On the 1881 Census Mary(ann) b.1817 is at Holbrook More says born MILFORD, Derbys John b 1827 is in Tottenham< Middlesex says born MILFORD, Derbys If you have found any of them on other Census, where do they say they were born? If these are the correct people born in Milford, they were probably employed in the Cotton Mills - do you have any occupations for any of the family. Just to give you an idea of the places they could have lived and still been bpt in Duffield - Belper, Milford, Holbrook, Shottle, Ashlyhay, Alderwasley, Little Eaton, etc. etc. Too many places to do a random search. Hi Mable, As I suspected the Dawson family were not living in Duffield. 1841 Census HO107/180/14 Folio 20 Holbrook Moor, Nr. Belper Derbyshire. Dawson Septimus 55 C hose maker born Derbyshire " Alice 55 - " " James 25 Quarry Labourer " " Maryann 20 Silk Seamer " " Alice 20 " " " " Francis 15 Silk Hose Maker " " John 14 ? Labourer. ( hard to read but could be railway Labourer) born Derbyshire. Scragg Susan 54 Char. Woman "
1851 Census ho 107/2144 fOLIO 264 Sch. 66 New Zealand, Holbrook, Derbyshire
Dawson Alice Head Widow 59 Glove Stitcher Holbrook Scragg Susanna Sister U/Married 64 Pauper " Dawson Mary Dau " 33 Silk Glove Stitcher Belper " George Nephew 7 " " " Holbrook " Alice Niece 1 Wheatley ** Joseph Visitor 25 Coal Miner "
** This is who Mary married 1852.
For the 1841 Census only, the ages were rounded down 5 years e.g. if age is stated as 20, they would be aged between 20 - 25 years. Septimus is a "C hose maker", ofter called a framework knitter. the C denotes that he was making hose from Cotton. a "Silk Seamer" the hose were knitted flat (not a tube as today) the seamer was responsible for sewing up the flat hose, to make a stocking - hence the seam we used to get in stockings. Silk workers, either knitters or seamers were paid a little more for their work.
Sorry, I am unable to do a Census Search for Derby as my local library only have the returns for Belper & District.
Hope this helps Spendlove
