1851 Census Royston - easy one!
« on: Saturday 02 July 05 11:38 UTC (UK) »

Hi Folks,
Could somebody please tell me the address associated with the following 1851 Royston census entry:

Royston/Buntingford              Book 8 Folio 72  FF
The Whole Parish of Layston Fol: 77/4 FCH 13
Name                          Occ               Age  Born
MEDCALF Thomas         HEAD   Marr 40    Ware
MEDCALF Stephana       Wife     Marr 40    Whaddon
There are about 9 other people listed. It must have been a big house - but where is it?

Many thanks for any assistance Kiss

Hi Di,

On the census form the address is shown as HIGH STREET, in the parish of Layston, town of Buntingford.

Nice and easy.

Thank you very much Peter,
- It wouldn't happen to say where in High Street or any info on neighbouring residence? I would love to get a photo of the house as the family moved to OZ, 2 years later - last UK address and all that!
Thanks anyway
Regards

Hi Keith,

Oh you lovely man - I've bookmarked your site to look at in detail later.  One of the shops shown was a Grocer and Tea dealer - I guess it's "pick a house" time??
I will get back to you if I find a Bateman ancestor (you haven't any Medcalf ancestors, do you?)
Many thanks

Thanks Keith,

Would still love to know which house was theirs - if the census has no further info I will have to leave this one as "Close but not quite finished!"
Happy hunting

Hi Di,

That looks good that  Peter has found -

The picture I have is by John and JC Buckler  and is in the Hertford County Record Office.

I have looked again at the larger photo I have, but can't read any of the signs - sorry.

It is supposed to be of High St c1830

Cheers

Hi Peter and Keith,

I LOVE YOU BOTH!

Thank you so very much. That just about answers all possible questions and now I will class this as "SOLVED". I believe Thomas was a part-time minister and probably not into "the evil drink" - very silly man!!!

Thank you for all your assistance. It's a shame we can't identify which house but that's OK - I'm over the moon.
This is by far, the very best site for answers that I have encountered. Keep up the good work. I have posted again as a general query (miracles may happen twice!)
If you can solve my other question - I will swim from OZ!
Regards
Di

Hi Di,

Not sure whether you are interested in this line but the BVRI records the following MEDCALF family births.  The info has been taken from NonConformist Registers.  These are all childrenof BENJAMIN MEDCALF  and his wife MARY (nee Sexton) d/o Samuel Sexton.   All born in Ware Herts.

Mary  9th Feb  1800
Martha  16th Oct 1801
Elizabeth  22 May 1803
Ebenezer  13 Oct  1808
THOMAS   22 Oct 1810
Hannah   16 Aug 1814
Benjamin   21 Feb 1817

Hope you are taking swimming lessons.

Regards   ...   Peter

Hi Peter,

Yes, you are good! (Probably the best)

They are the children of my Ben and Mary (and that is the Thomas of Buntingford)
BUT - Ben and Mary Married 1799 at St George in the East(can't find further info) - He seems to have appeared from nowhere - there are no birth records for him or his two brothers (Thomas and Joseph). Therein lies the challenge!

Swimming lessons progressing quickly (looks like I'll need them!!)
Thank you Peter - you make family research worthwhile.
Regards
Di
