Just wondered if anyone had any info on the Caseys in the Donaghmoyne area. I think one of my ancestors came from this area but moved to Clontibret before coming to Scotland late 1840's. His name was Bernard Casey (son of Michael Casey and Bridget Cumiskey) and wife was Elizabeth McDade. He came to Scotland to with cousins and 2nd cousins of Comiskeys and have also found a Henry Casey listed in the census in Glasgow of 1851 from "Donnemand, County Monaghan" which is obviously Donaghmoyne. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone ?

Hello Seumas,
This site shows the Casey heads of household living in Co. Monaghan during the years 1858-60 when Griffiths Valuation of Ireland was conducted in the County. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php

Hi Seumas Don't know if you will get this? But here goes... My Casey's and Cummiskey's married in Glasgow (Gran and Grandfather) 1933, But the Casey's Came from Co Monaghan and I think the Cummiskey's came from there too can't be sure though!
James casey born 1831 was the one who came to Glasgow and married a Scots lass Mary Roache. Hugh Cummiskey born about 1820 Ireland married Mary Gardner in 1841 in Glasgow. My Grandmother Agnes Cummiskey born 1908 married James Casey born 1905 in glasgow 1933. Do you think there is any connection? I have many more names in between if you are interested...

The Commeskey/Cummiskey's you are tracing might come from the same shoemaking family as mine.

My Hugh Cummiskey of Co. Monaghan was a shoe maker... His parents were John Cummiskey (Farmer) and Sarah Carr. I was led to believe that Hugh was one of 4 brothers who were musicians. Hugh married Mary Gardner and one of their sons was my G Grandfather Matthew Cummiskey (Slippermaker) who married Agnes Livingston. Hugh married Mary in 1841 and he died in 1889. Is this of any confirmation to you Seumas? I don't know very much about the Casey's I'm afraid... Just that James Casey born 1831 was from Co Monaghan, his parents were Patrick Casey and Agnes Boyle. He married Mary Roache here in Scotland. in 1971. Can you please let me know if we have a connection Seumas eh! Thanks my friend...

My researches are still incomplete with too many loose ends. I have researched Poor Relief Records here in Glasgow and OPR's of Castleblayney at the National Archives in Dublin, to try and tie together the Casey and Cummiskey line. My 3x great grandfather, Bernard Casey, died in 1856 in the High Street, his certificate was signed by James Cummiskey "second cousin", Bernards mother was Bridget Cummiskey. There were 2 Cummiskey brothers living beside Bernards family in 1851, Patrick and his family and Bryan (or Bernard) and his family, they were the sons of Owen Cummiskey and Agnes McCormick. I do know of a James Cummiskey, a musician, who was the son of John Cummiskey and Sarah Karr (this is the way its spelt on the death record) Still not sure of this James Casey, although my 2xgreat grandfather, Henry, had a brother called James, who eventually went to Yorkshire and worked in an ironworks. Incidentally, my Caseys are notorious for moving around, I have them in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness (!!!), Newcastle, Durham, Leeds, Preston, Ipswich and Cork.
Just found a Poor Relief Entry for your James Casey
4th June 1895, states he was born in Muckno, County Monaghan, aged 64, paper mill worker

It should be worth noting that a large area of the civil parish of Donaghmoyne including 34 townlands is actually within the catholic parish of Inniskeen unfortunately overlooked in the otherwise very useful Irish Times site.
Patrick Cavanagh the poet is always identified with Inniskeen but his family actually lived at Mucker in the civil parish of Donaghmoyne.
I can list the 34 townlands if required.
Good luck, J.T.A.

Just been looking again at some of those names which looks promising
Henry Casey of Drumherrif could be the Henry Casey who lived in the Drygate area of Glasgow in 1851. Neal Casey, again of Drumherrif, could be the same "Neil Casey" who had a son called James, a shoemaker living in the High Street in Glasgow. Also have a Hugh Casey living in Glasgow in the early 1850's so theres a wee chance I could be on the right track

You have no idea how pleased i am to have found another Casey researcher and i cant believe i havnt found this thread before. I found this branch difficult to get started on as you say Seumas they travelled around so much they are sometimes hard to pin down– and i found it quite frustrating , had a mental block and lost interest but someone did very kindly spend time on this to get me started and revived my interest although I havnt got much further.
Bernard Casey (I have him as Barnard on a marriage cert and Barney on 1851 census) Born 1811 (?) Ireland Died 7 July 1856 82 High Street Glasgow (off LDS Submitted entry – not checked) Married Elizabeth McDade in Ireland c1831 (she is wrongly noted as Dickson on son Francis death certificate which is witnessed by his wife Lavinia Spiers)
Again, on LDS Submitted entry is has Bernards parents as Michael Casey married Bridgett Commisky – Ive not checked this either.
Their son John is my gt gt grandfather. On 1861 census says that he was born in Monaghan. On this he is with “wife” Helen and two sons John and William b Glasgow. John married Ann Phillips in 1864 Huddersfield Yorkshire – these are my gt gt grandparents. Johns father is noted as Barnard Casey, Outdoor worker, Deceased on the marriage cert.
Ann died in 1901 Crownpoint Rd Glasgow. I have no idea where John died but it was somewhere between 1897 and 1901 as he was alive when his son Francis married and dead by 1901 as Ann is described as a Widow on her death cert.
John and Anns children 1. Francis 1866 Ipswich Suffolk 2. James 1867 Huddersfield Yorkshire 3. Robert 1868 Ipswich Suffolk 4. Henry 1870 Peston Lancashire 5. Mary Ann 1872 Rochdale Lancashire 6. Joseph 1876 Ireland 7. George 1879 Chorley Lancashire 9. Edmund 1882 Chorley Lancashire
Francis b1866 is my gt grandfather. The only siblings I have managed to find information on are George and Edmund.
I have certifcates and information concerning the above that need i need to sort out and put in place but best keep things simple for now.
I hope this thread is still alive !

This is brilliant news, we are related !!! Bernard/Barnard/Barney Casey was my 3 x great grandfather, his son Henry, Johns twin brother, was my 2 x great grandfather and his daughter was Mary Casey (born Edinburgh in 1867) was my great grandmother. The Casey's are on my mums side, she will be delighted to hear of you, she still has the name Casey as he middle name, after her granny. I live in Glasgow and have researched Poor Relief Records detailing Henry Casey's movements and the kind of person he was would love to send them to you. Will attach me email addy at the end of this. Am off to Dublin next month for another look at Tithe books from Donaghmoyne and to have a look at any OPR books from neighbouring parishes as I know the parish that I think the Caseys came from didn't have OPR's until 1864. Hopefully will find more. Would love any certificates or other stuff sent to me and I will send all the stuff I have, my email addy is (*) and I have a webspace with my family tree, there is a photo of Mary Casey taken in the early 1800's there which might be of interest.

Hello Tracey and Seamus.... I'm Christine Casey (Robinson) sister of Susan (wee Sue) ..hi sis... Wondered if either of you had been to Monaghan - Ireland since the last posting we are seeking more info on our Casey and Cummiskey ancestors..there may be a link between our families we know of Patrick Casey born around 1805 in Ireland and his wife Ann Boyle we think from Muckno in Monaghan....we also have John Cummiskey born 1800 and his wife Sarah Carr / Karr from Monaghan....the two couples had children who came to Scotland in the 1850's and the two lines met later on with my grandparents..Agnes Cummiskey born Edinburgh 1908 and James Casey born 1905 in Glasgow, but they seemed to be living close by each other and various other relatives married Casey's or Cummiskey's.....before our grandparents...its amazing to us to see links way back in Ireland with the two families...do you have any of our names or dates among your info? Hopeful Regards - Christine Casey Robinson....In Perth, Western Australia....All my Casey family are still in Glasgow.....

Hi Christine
How great to hear from another potential link. Seamus is your man when it comes to unravelling Cummiskey, Commaskey, Kummiskey ect. I have been attempting to work on the more "recent" Caseys in the hope of finding more connections but i think we are still a scarce bunch.
It will be good to see what unravels here.
Regards Tracey

Hi Tracey I'm hopeful that Seumas may contact me at some point too regarding the Cummiskey links and as for the Casey's...well I'm a Casey myself so I'm a bit partial to them...my parents had five daughters and my father was the only son...so our Casey's may not continue for much longer ...however Ive named my son Jamie Casey Robinson...so hopefully he'll pass it on to the next generation.....one of my sisters is Patricia Casey, my father was James Casey his father was James Casey - his father was Patrick Casey - his father was James Casey and his father was Patrick Casey born 1805 in Muckno Monaghan .....not too many names for us to remember....Good luck in your searching and maybe we'll connect again at some point...Kind Regards - Christine Casey Robinson
