BOWLAND
« on: Sunday 03 July 05 13:21 BST (UK) »

My grandfather Henry Wilkinson Bowland was born in 1894 in St Ives Cambs He had a half brother Reginald Thomas born in St Ives in1906 .
who died in 1983 and was buried in Sawtry churchyard.

Thanks for the help in tracing my great grandfather and his wife.Thomas Dalby Bowland  and Sarah Swanson any idea of their dates of deaths?

Is it possible to find out who their parents were and where they came from please?
The Thomas Dalby reference came from the diarist who accompanied Charles Dickens to USA in mid 1850`s so I was told many years ago.

Hi Ian
I have tried checking the 1891 census for Sarah but the only Sarah Sansom or variant, born Warboys is 10 years too old and the one of the right age was born St Ives. Have you got a copy of her marriage certificate with her fathers name on? That should help pin her down.

Hi
Found Thomas' parents on the 1861 in Sawtry
RG9 Piece 972 Folio 43 Page 14
Front Street, sawtry
BOWLAND
Henry Head Marr 36 Woodman labourer b Sawtry
Hannah Wife Marr 37 b Yaxley
Mary A Daur 11 Scholar b Yaxley
Henry Son 10 b Sawtry
Martha Daur 5 b Sawtry
Emma Daur 3 b Sawtry
Frederick Son 1 b Sawtry
Also on the BMD Indexes

Marriage
December Quarter 1848
District-Huntingdon (this covers Sawtry)
County-Huntingdonshire
Volume 14  Page 369
HENRY BOWLAND and on the same page one of the names is HANNAH ROBINETT.
I checked on the 1861 and there are several ROBINETTS in Yaxley, so this could be your Thomas' parents marriage.

Hi
Sorry I haven't got access to the 1841 and 1851 censuses, but if you repost I should say someone will have access to them for you

Cambs FHS has an excellent website with 1841 and 1851 indexes plus baptism/burial indexes 1801-37

http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html

But Sawtry is in Hunts! I'll check 1841.

I could see no Bowlands in any of the three parishes of Sawtry, Hunts in 1841 but having said that the quality was poor and barely legible in parts.

The 1851 would obviously be of most value though, but Hunts 1851 has not been released on CDrom. There are transcriptions by Hunts FHS and a posting on the Hunts look up request board may give you a result. Alternatively you could try Huntingdonshire look up exchange where I know a couple of people are prepared to look up Hunts 1851.

Regards
