2. Help ! - I’ve got my webspace what do I do now ?
If you have no experience with websites this is the most scary bit. But actually it isn’t! You will need to replace this ‘holding’ page with your own page using an FTP program. Look at posting 6 where there is lots of advice and directions to free programs! Trystan has sent you the passwords you will need
Before you can do this you need to look at the next posting on what to put on your site

4. Do I need a special program?
There are lots of different methods you can use. Choose what suits you the best. Check the other Rootschat sites to see which programs they have used and how they are presented
a) Family History Programs: If you already have a Family History Programs this will probably write web pages for you. Look for a command in the menus: Export to HTML, or Create Web Pages, or something similar ... The downside is if you want to edit these you are quite restricted in what you can do.
For a step-by-Step guide click on this link Topic: TUTORIAL: Step-by-Step Guide to building your website http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,93490.msg397239.html#msg397239
b) Programs for creating webpages from GEDCOM files:
c) Programs for creating webpages: These programs will give you the freedom to design your pages but are not specifically geared to family history
d) Combined Method These programs help with your trees but allow you much more flexibility
e) DIY: Disadvantage: you need to know HTML Advantage: If you can, you have total contol over what you're doing !

5. Testing / Previewing my site
Do all your testing offline and make sure you have a copy of your site somewhere safe! http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,47483.0.html
You can upload your pages as soon as you are happy with them.
You don’t need to complete your site before you upload it. If you just do a temporary index page it will delete your holding page so that Trystan and the Rootschat team will know you can access your site. The very nature of researching family history means most sites are ‘work in progress.’

6. Uploading to your site
FTP – File Transfer Protocol
This is the program that you need in order to upload you pages to the Rootsweb server.
There is very good help and information available through this http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,54625.msg218872.html
Berlin-Bob: Just to keep you going, till you have a better programm - There is also an FTP program with your RootsChat webspace: Just login to your webspace manager, and click on "File Manager" Then you can load and delete files. It is a bit cumbersome for dealing with more than one file at a time, but OK just for quick fixes.
15.07.2005: Check out this thread aswell if you have FTP problems; this might be your answer too ! Topic: Uploading to website http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,73066.0.html

8. File Types
This is the list of file types which are permitted on the Rootschat webspace:
"The following list of file types are the only file types permitted on RootsChat Webspace members sites. All other file types are not permitted:
js, swf, au, snd, ged mid, midi, ram, wav, gif, jpg, wrl, vrml, css, html, htm, rtf, png, psd, ico, doc, php, sql;
Any other files located by RootsChat Webspace will be automatically deleted.
The maximum upload file size is 1 MB. The limit for jpegs is 1 MB, for gifs is 1 MB and for HTML or Text files is 0.5 MB."
One other point to bear in mind, is that WINDOWS is pretty "sloppy" about file names, it treats upper and lower case the same.
RootsChat uses a LINUX server, which is more fussy. Best tip here is to keep all file names in lower-case, and avoid blanks and special characters in the names.

9. From Beginner to Expert ...
For many of the people on Rootschat this has been their very first attempt at building a website and they all struggled but it is very worthwhile so keep at it!! Look at these sites to see how well two of the complete novices managed http://batemans-history.rootschat.net/ http://juliancbaker.rootschat.net

Just wanted to say a big, big Thank you to Jocie for all the work she has put into this.
We will be working on it together, to improve it, so that anybody who wants to start a website can jump straight in !
If anything is not clear, let us know, and we can add bits and re-write things, etc..
