MCDONOUGH- 1861 census
« on: Sunday 03 July 05 15:52 UTC (UK) »

Would appreciate a lookup in 1861 census, probably of Lanarkshire. Frank McDonough (McDonoch- var. spellings) and wife Catherine. He would have been around 25, born in Ireland (Sligo) and probably "iron puddler."  Married in Glasgow in 1856.  Appears in 1871 census in Old Monkland.

Hi, I can't find anything under McDonough or variant.
I wonder if this could be them under McDonald, mis-transcribes do occur.
You would probably recognise the children if this is them.

1861 names index Glasgow and Lanarkshire. There was no sign of them in Glasgow.
Census taken Old Monklands

Francis McDonald age 23 born Ireland
Catherine age 27 born Ireland
Andrew age 3 born Old Monklands

Liz, Thanks for the lookup. It doesn't appear that this is my couple, as there are no Andrews in our family and he doesn't show up in the 1871 census,  nor does this Mary. However, there are a couple "missing children" in the family.  Francis appears too young, however, and  they seemed to follow the traditional naming procedures: his first son, Peter (after the paternal grandfather); first daughter, Ann (after maternal grandmother). This couple moved to Durham/Yorkshire around 1861-62, as Peter was born there in 1862 Then they moved back to Old Monkland. I will explore some more. I have searched England 1861 census with no luck.

Gratefully,

Richard

Hi,  Do you have Catherine's maiden name?
I found this in IGI

ANN MCDONACH
  Female

~~~~~~~~
Event(s):
Birth:  01 APR 1857   Dalziel, Lanark, Scotland
~~~~~~~~
Parents:
  Father:  FRANCIS MCDONACH
  Mother:  CATHERINE MULLEIN

Dalziel parish is only a few miles from Old Monklands

I tried searching for an Ann, but no luck. I guess the family were already in England by census date

Liz,

The Ann you found was, I believe, their first child. I also located this birth on the IGI and the original on Scotlandspeople.uk.co.  Catherine's maiden surname was Mullin. I have searched the 1861 census of England on line and found only 2 Francis McDonoughs-- neither fit. This is why I think they were still in Scotland. Of course, they may have been living outside of Lanarkshire. You didn't identify the occupation of the Francis McDonald you found. My Frank McDonough was, as I noted, an iron puddler; this is found on his marriage record (28 Apr 1856) and on the 1871 census of Bothwell. Where was he in 1861, if not in England?

Thanks for the help,

Richard
