Which St Georges?
« on: Sunday 03 July 05 17:11 BST (UK) »

Can somebody please help, I have a relative who was born in 1847, and according to the 1881 census was born in St Georges, Middx. I am having difficulty finding out which St Georges, Hanover Square or in the East. I think there is possibly one more. As you can see I'm not a Londoner and am totally lost, map reading never a strong point!

Your help and if possible a map ref. for the actual area would be marvellous, thank you Cheesy  sue

Hi Sue,

As you say there's more than one.  The best way to settle it might be to post the individual's name and details from the 1881 census.  Also finding the person on another census might clarify the situation.

Have you looked on FreeBDM or the IGI for a birth/baptism entry which would indicate the parish?

Thank you Jonathan, unfortunately that is leaving me non the wiser. The person I seek is Alfred Wright, born 1847 and on 1881 census as St Georges, Middx. The 1901 census seems to have him lodging with a family in Portswood, Southampton and this time his place of birth is given as London St Georges, as does the 1891 census. I really am stuck aren't I?

Thank you, that entry shows him as a bugler doesn't it, I had hoped it was the same one. Now, perhaps I'll be able to find his parents and siblings.

Hi

I'm pretty sure this is the right one because he is in all the censuses as b 1847 St Georges and in the Royal Engineers

Hi, I've had a look at 1837online.com and have found one family of Wrights born St Georges, Hanover Square. However, on 1881 census I have found a William A Wright and his family and wonder if this may be Alfred's older brother and family. The head of hous , William is a C A O Survey Corps Pensioner, and on the 1901 census shown as Rtrd R.E. and Civil Service. Two of his sons in 1901 are also shown as  Civil Servants in the Bedford Ordnance Survey Office. I do hope they are related!!

Any more info will be gratefully received, many thanks for your time.
