More Churchers

Hello

I would like some help on the following family. I am doing some research into Joseph Churcher (b.1829) who married Emma Greenfield (b.1825) in 1860. I have found out quite a lot about them and their children after 1860.

However, on their marriage certificate Joseph is listed as a widower, does this mean that he was previously married? I have found his father Eli Churcher (b.1788) in 1861 living in Wickahm, Hampshire with his wife Mary (b.1794), daughter Catherine (presumably Joseph's sister b.1835) and a Grandson Joseph H. Churcher b.1857. Is this Joseph's son from a previous marriage?

I am sending off for Joseph Herberts birth certificate to find out who his parents are, but I have lost him after 1871 where he is a scholar in Framlingham, Suffolk. I have also lost Catherine after 1861.

If anyone has any info about Joseph and his first wife before 1860 or about Catherine and Joseph Herbert after I would really apreciate it

Thanks

Laura

Hi Laura,

Yes, Joseph was obviously married before.  There is no guarantee that Joseph Churcher b 1857 is Joseph's son, but it is possible.  If Eli had other sons, then Joseph junior could belong to him.  Or he could be illigitimate.

Here are some of the things you could do to solve this one:

find the family in the 1851 census - Joseph may already be married, or may still be at home.

Look for another marriage of a Joseph Churcher between about 1847 and 1860.

Look for a death of a female Churcher around 1857. (If Joseph juniour is Joseph's son from his first marriage, perhaps his mother died when he was born.)
