John Horn Born 1795 Dufton, Westmorland son of William Horn & Ruth Willon. John married agnes probably 1820 ish, I have found 2 marriages 1: Agnes Fawell 16/10/1820 Newbiggin by Appleby. 2: Agnes Metcalf 4/12/1823. Please can anyone help me to determine the right Agnes Thanks
I've found John on the 1861 Cenus lodging with a family in Great Ormskirk. He is down as a widower - the full entry is:
John Horn - Lodger - Widower - Age 66 - Ag Lab - West Dufton
the family he is lodging with look to be named Renniston and he is one of 2 lodgers.
So I would suggest a few things you could try:
Post a request for the 1841 or 1851 for John in the Appleby area and see if you can track him down with Agnes and any kids - this may give you a clue as to which parish they lived in or the kids were born in which could narrow it down. If you are not able to get a lookup you can search the 1851 name index on-line at http://rolyg.members.beeb.net/index.htm or buy the transcripts for the 1851 from [urlhttp://www.cumbriafhs.com/][/url]
See if you can track down the deaths of both of the Agnes's and the other John. The only other possible John on the 1861 in Cumb / West is in Hensingham near Whitehaven and seems to be linked to another family so unless they have moved out of the area then you should be able to find them using Free BMD or 1837online. You may have to buy a couple of certificates to eliminate the wrong couple though. If you find both Agnes's and get hold of them you will hopefully find your John registering the death and being the last man standing so to speak. If you end up with 2 John's registering 2 Agnes's then try and find which one of them dies before 1861 (again by getting the certificate) and this should hopefully solve it.
Try and get hold of the parish records for both marriages and see if they give you any additional information - e-mail Kendal Record Office at http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/recordoffices/knrec.asp. If you are lucky then the clerk will have recorded some additional info or they will have married by licence and this may tell you more about them.

Thank you for the info I will follow up your suggestions. I have managed to find 2 sons for John, in 1871 he is living with William in Asby and Coates, by 1881 he is living with Richard at Low Rutters farm, Burrells, East ward, at least this narrows the search years for his death.

Can you get a birth certificate for one of the children? Are they after 1837? That will give the mother's maiden name. Andrea

No birth certificates sadly as the 2 children I've found so far are: William born circa 1829 and Richard born circa 1830. There are more children but these are the only 2 I can link with any certainty, but thanks Regards Denise
