Help a poor struggler
« on: Monday 04 July 05 22:03 BST (UK) »

I'm new to this and having trouble finding my way!! I'm Alis and I would like to chat to people who have ancestors in Gloucester, notably Longhope and Sapperton. I've been researching my family history for 20 years now and met some family members from Genes Reunited but there must be more of you out there. If anyone recognises the surnames Bullock (Longhope) Turner (Longhope) Parker (Sapperton) Fawlk (Lea et al) or Callow (Ruspidge) I would love to hear from you.

Hi Alis Wink

and welcome to RootsChat. You will soon find your way around.

I am researching the name Bullock in Longhope.

John Bullock born c 1798 at Mitcheldean. I believe his parents were Thomas Bullock & Mary Coleman married at Longhope in 1789 - but haven't proved it yet.

As you will know from your own research there are a large number of people named Bullock in the Longhope area. If we can make a connection it would be great.

Regards

Hi Alis, Smiley

if we are related it's a first for me. I have never found any connection at all to anyone. I often think I am the only person in the world who is looking for my rellies.

Look forward to hearing from you.

I know that there are Bullock's aplenty in Longhope. What is also clear is that there were a core of families all marrying each other which makes family history a real headache.

My family emerged from Thomas Bullock and Susannah Phelps (daughter of William Phelps and Susannah Blewitt) who married in the early 1800s. Thomas' brother George married Susannah's sister Sarah. Thomas and Susannah had a number of children, some we are certain about Ann b1824, Eliza b1826 (both never married) Henry b 1836 (married Phoebe Dobbins Jackson, they had 13 children)  Susan born 1841 and John b 1830. John married Alice Turner and their son William b 1855 was my Great Grandfather. Within all this there are other Bullocks floating around who we have never been able to pin down. Any sniff of a connection?

Hi again Alis Smiley

I will have a look at the information you have. John Bullock of Mitcheldean is my 2nd great grandfather. He died in 1847 so I can only get him on the 1841 census which says he was born in the County.

I have traced him to Longhope but there are so many families named Bullock there it's confusing - to say the least.

I sending you a PM.

Regards
Darcy

Graceland, Smiley

do you believe I might have found some sort of a connection at last?

After all your work looking for graves and checking out if people called Bullock, in The Forest, resemble me  Grin Grin

I'm thrilled just to have found someone else researching the same name in the same place!

Cheers
