A very special picture
« on: Monday 04 July 05 21:20 UTC (UK) »

I'm hoping some of you great guys may be able to help restore this picture a little bit.

It is me & my dad taken in 1966 and my dad, sadly, died in 1974 so it is very precious but also very fragile.

Thanks for anything you can do with it

Dinie

Hi dinie,
This photo could possably be repaired successfully if it was scanned at a higher resolution giving a larger size to work  on. I have had a quick go at fixing this photo but it's hard to see the facial detail.

Hi Dinie

WOW!!  this is a challenge but most of us would love to have a go at it, but like deadants says a high res version is required.
If you can get one done I will PM you with my email address

Regards
Ken

This may seem a daft question but how do I scan at a higher resolution. This is all new to me, so i'm not sure what to do.

I have a Lexmark X1100 Series All In One System, it gives advanced scan options where it allows me to increase/decrease the DPI between 72 and 9600.

No it's not a stupid question at all, go for as many dpi it will allow.

A few of us will have a go with a better scan defo.  Smiley

That's not a bad effort Ken. You seem to have been carrying the weight the the last week and doing a great job I might say.
I have come down with the flu and I just can't get myself motivated to do anything at the moment.
To top it off I have had a head cold as well, so I'm feeling rather miserable at the moment.
Hopefully, I will start to come good next week.

Deadants
Sorry to hear you're not feeling too good, hope you feel better soon.

Ken
I know you have done a really great job on my photo but is there any chance of tidying the crease across my face up a little bit and making the mouth more defined.

If anyone can add a little colour, my dress was a deep red velvet and dad's suit was black.

I'm not expecting any miracles but know you guys will do your best and I will be forever grateful.

Hi Dinie

The problem is very little detail of the picture remains in the original, your mouth now has been highlighted, but truth be told it is made up from parts of your eyebrows. I think it still works ok

Also tried to smooth out your face a bit more, but lost more detail so I dont think anymore can be done with it, maybe someone can prove me wrong.

Regards
Ken

It's possible this image may reveal more detail than shown. In orde to get the best possble image from this, should:

Tell us what size the original is.
Use the best quality scanner you can get your hands on (so important).
Scan no higher than 600dpi (trust me, I've done a zillion images, anything higher is wasted disk space).
Scan in full, 24 bit color, even if the image is b&w.
(for puposes of posting here, save as jpg with NO COMPRESSION.)
Finally, for an image such as this, I would scan the image once, spin in around 90, and scan it again. Post both images here.
Logged

For the best possible restoration: Scan at 300dpi • full color (even B&W's) • save with as little jpeg compression as possible.

Hi vikki

It would be great to improve this picture, but I dont understand this line, why spin it around?

Scanning from different directions often changes the way cracks are captured. I've often done this. Afterward, I line up the two images in Photoshop, on seperate layers and merge the best of the two. I once restored an image with a line straight through the eye, but after trying this technique, the line almost disappeared on it's own.
