I am looking for the parents of John Young and Agnes Twaddle, they married in Sanquer in 1866.I have the birth of a John Young 13/3/1838 Perth parents John Young born 1812 Perth and Elizabeth Stewart born 1816 Perth, they married in 1837.I was wondering if this could be them as john Young who married Agnes Twaddle named their daughter Elizabeth Russle Stewart Young,so Elizabeth would be after her mother and Stewart is her mothers maiden name, but where does Russle come into it.As regards to Agnes Twaddle all i have on her is a census record living with her grandfather who is named Cringan, she is listed as single.I think i got that right, cant seem to find the census record.Any help on these 2 families very much appreciated.Anne.

Have you been able to find the marriage registry for John Young and Agnes Twaddle?
This should give both sets of parents and occupations as well as whether they are alive.
This would help in knowing what census to look for. Stewart is a very common name in SW Scotland I've a few myself.
Which census do you have Agnes on incidently? If you can give me an address I can maybe go to previous census to see who is in the house then.
Cheers, Pam

Hi Pam,John Young and Agnes Twaddle married in Sanquer in 1866.This is the info i have for her.1851 Census,High Street Sanquer.Agnes Twaddle age 6 living in the household of her grandfather John Cringan, retired collier age 58.Also in the household Agnes Cringan wife aged 60 born Sanquer,Janet Cringan daughter born Sanquer age 26 single and grandson William Cringan age 1 born Glasgow.I had previously posted this message on this board in January and a kind lady suggested that she could be the illigitimate daughter of Janet Cringan age 26.If this is right how do i get the fathers name. Also Pam can you remember you said next time you went to Edinburgh you would look for the parents of David Kennedy who married Margaret Nicol in Dundee.Dont worry if you didnt get round to it i know you must be awful busy.Good luck with your new moderator job,i didnt mean to scare you.Anne.

Y'okay,
Good and Bad news.
Bad... I have no access to Dundee Records so can't help with the Kennedy marriage.
Good... To make up for the above disappointment I used a few credits on Scotlandspeople to get your Twaddle/Young conundrum sorted. PM your email and I'll send you the image but here are the details...
When, Where, and How Married
1866 On the fifteenth day of June at Calton Close Sanquhar After Banns according to the form of the forms of the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland
Signatures of Parties
Rank or Profession, whether Single or Widowed, and Relationship (if any)
/Signed/ John Young 25 Ironstone Miner Bachelor
/Signed/ Agnes Twaddle 21 her X Mark Domestic Servant (Spinster)
Usual Residence John Grasswater? Parish of Auckinleck
Agnes Burnhouse Sorn?
Name, Surname & Rank or Profession of Father
John Robert Young, Putter in Ironstone mine (Deceased) Elizabeth Young, Maiden Surname Stewart
Agnes John Twaddle, General Labourer (Deceased) Janet Cringan
Minister & Witnesses
/Signed/ Matthew Crawford (Minister)
/Signed/ William Young (Witness) Robert Young (Witness)
So that's that bit.
I didn't have this info in the library or I could have found the Ayrshire census for Robert Young hey ho.
Here's Agnes and John in 1881 in case you don't have it...

Some Sanquhar census material that may help.

Agnes Twaddell Serv unmar 15 Domestick Serv Sanquhar
There were lots of Russel/Russell families in Sanquhar - Janet's mum may have been a Russel or it may just be a very kind friend/neighbour. I have a Joseph Faulder Fallon in my family the Faulder comes from the name of the gent who employed Joseph's father when he was orphaned.
If you think of anything else you need a look up, give me a shout.
Cheers, Pam

Pam,thankyou so much for the info,i have one more question and i will leave you peace. On marriage record for John Young and Agnes Twaddle it says John aged 25,i went to the LDS site to look for the marriage date of Johns Parents and this is what i got.Robert Young and Elizabeth Stuart married Old Cumnnock 3/2/1826,if you work it out and these are the right parents John would have been born 15 years after they married so i dont think i have the right Robert Young and Elizabeth Stuart. The other thing i was thinking was, was Johns father named John and not Robert as i found the marriage in Perth of a John Yong and Elizabeth Stuart in 1837 which is more like the parents of John. Will you let me know what you think Pam,and i am sorry to be a pain again.Anne.

I only have the certificate to go on. I would say Robert is the name I've never come across a situation where the name of the parents are wrong.
15 years isn't a long time at all for having children.
I'm 21 years older than my brother and many of the families in my tree have 11/12/13 children spread over 15 years or so.
With the info you have a look at the 1841/51/61 census for Ayr would help you know if John was the youngest of a big family.
Perth is some distance from Ayr and Dumfries so I personally would find it unlikely especially since Young and Stewart are such common names.
What do others think? I'm making these assumptions based on what I found in my family.
Pam

Thankyou Pam,i am sticking with what you say,i know they did have big families in those days so it is probably the case that he could have been the youngest.I asked my dad if he knew if the Youngs had big families and he said as far as he know they were like rabbits,i feel sorry for the women folk.Well anyway Pam,thankyou again for your help.Anne.
