David,

Just to say, I've just found out; the Henry Woods that James P was staying with, married May Ann Partridge b 1819 Thurleigh. They got married Nov 1834 in Bletsoe. Haven't found the link to Mary & James yet

Can you list me the Henry Woods family details - ta

David

You cannot have too much - the more you have - the more you can throw away

I think the Mary Ann (who married the Woods chap) was daughter of Joseph - from the Thomas & Elizabeth dynasty.
I have found a James b in 1817 in Sharnbrook in the later census - could be her brother ? but it sheer coincidence & no proof.

Anyway thanks for more - now then, how can we go further back ? are there no useful census before 1831. I have a contact who has both Bletsoe & Sharnbrook PR but she says they only go up to 1812. There's is the IGI for other odds & end

Any advice welcome ?  John

Hi John

Beds parish registers pre 1812 are virtually all on the IGI as controlled extracts, so are pretty reliable. But coverage is not so complete post 1812

The transcriptions up to 1812 are available from the record office either as hard copy or fiche, but post 1812 you need to look at the microfilms, either at the record office (which for you may be the more convenient) or by ordering from your nearest LDS FHC (and I don't think there is one close to Bedford - Stevenage, St Albans, N'ton, P'boro seem to be the closest). No useful censuses pre 1841 I'm afraid, even if they have survived.

You've done the easy online/CDrom bit - now it's down to the real thing!

Good hunting

Hello

I thought the census only went back to 1841 [apart from the odd local thing]?

Well, here is a bit from the Muster lists:

Sharnbrook: Mark PARTRIDGE was chosen by lot to serve in 1760 - his substitute Thos CLARK [of Wellingborough] served instead

Wm PARTRIDGE [of Pavenham] served instead of Wm DIXON [of Turvey]

John PARTRIDGE of Milton Ernest was an 18 year old unmarried servant when he volunteered for National Defence in 1803

Richard PARTRIDGE was a taylor in Oakley in 1803 [Military Class 4 - so either over 50 or, if younger married & over 30 or, if under 30 he had 2 or more children under 10!]

In Bletsoe, Thomas PARTRIDGE was a 46 year old labourer with 4 children under 10 in 1803

In Sharnbrook - same year - there were three PARTRIDGEs [all were wheelwrights]
 Jery. PARTRIDGE was 46 [Military Class 4];
John PARTRIDGE was 20 & Daniel PARTRIDGE who was 18 [both Military Class 1 = unmarried];

1819: In Harrold Jn PARTRIDGE  was a substitute for Wm FAREY

1831: In Pavenham, Jos PARTRIDGE [signed his name] was a substitute for Wm HIPWELL

Thanks Cathy for the muster list info

I'm pretty sure the Thomas P (age 46) is my g-g-g-grandfather b.Bletsoe 1764

& an entry on the IGI has his father to be Mark P b.1725 Sharnbrook
so he could be on your list

Jery. P is most likely Jeremiah  born abt 1757 at Sharnbrook, and his sons were John (16 MAR 1783) & Daniel (11 JUL 1785)

regards
John

No, problems, John

...but the PARTRIDGEs I listed were in the local area to Bletsoe..there so many of them!

The reference is Bedfordshire Muster Lists 1539 - 1837 [pub by BHRS, vol 71, edited by Nigel Lutt]

Come on John, be reasonable! It's nearly midnight here in France. Can I do it in the morning? With the time difference you can study the results while you're munching your cornflakes

Hi John

1841 Pavenham HO107/008-11

Folio 14B
West End, Pavenham
Samuel Partridge 40 Bailiff
Frances Partridge41
Ezra Partridge 10
Martha Partridge 19
Julia Partridge 12
George Partridge 15
All bar Frances born in Beds

Folio 3b
Harriet Partridge 10 Inmate (crossed through) b in Beds
in household of William 45 and Catherine 30 Hulatt.

I'm glad there weren't as many Partridges as Hulatts - every other family seemed to be Hulatt!

Couldn't see any others I'm afraid. Is that enough?

Regards

Thanks David, That ties in with later censuses, for Samuel, Ezra & Harriet, although Samuel's wife in later census is Jane born 1798-1801 in Horham or Blockham in Oxfordshire.  Could be Frances Jane or Jane Frances I suppose.
Haven't found a marriage yet either.

Now funny you should mention the Hulatts ..... there's a John Partridge of Thurleigh who married a Millicent Hulatt of Felmersham in 1880 - No I'm not going down that road - I've enough offshoots on the go already. !!!

Cheers John

Hi JP

Might be a dangerous assumption about Frances/Jane. There could be two marriages that you are missing!

NBI: burial Pavenham 15 Apr 1847. Fanny Partridge age 48 (Fanny=Frances)
Other Partridge burials in Pavenham
23 Apr 1847 George age 21
4 Oct 1846 Julia age 17
29 May 1847 Martha age 25

There must have been some sort of epidemic to have 4 family members dying in the space of a few months.

There's a marriage on FreeBMD in Sept 1847 in Bedford reg district, which includes Pavenham, of Samuel Partridge. One of the other halves is a Jane Woodward.  ?? ??

Over to you!

Regards
