A new UK BMD site, Darlington, has just gone online.
http://www.darlington.gov.uk/Services/Register+Office/RegOfficeSearch.htm
Edited on 26.11.2004 A Thank you to BobtheBee !
I have no idea how good it is, as I am not searching in Durham, but the UK BMD sites are usually pretty good.
Maybe a Durham-searcher could add a review here ?

This is a great site! I have found several people I have been searching for. Even if you do not want to order the certificates it is still a wonderful source for Darlington. Lots of births and marriages, deaths seem very scarce. Tortie

Hi, Great site ....cuts down on going cross eyed paging through the 1837online site!
Only one tiny little gripe (which it appears will be sorted soon) you can't pay by credit card....got to write & send a cheque.....probably outweighed by the fact the site is free to use.
Cheers Claire (aka tabitha!)

Hi,
I have used this site to try to locate a death certificate of a relative who died in 1892, identified on FreeBMD, and in the register images available.
When I complained I was told my relatives death has not yet been entered onto the database, and that only records for 1837-1867, 1921-1927 and 1946 had been added to date.
I included an image of the General Registers page, and they very quickly replied as above, but said that they had located the record for my relative, gave me the 'local reference' (totally incompatible with the National one) and invited me to apply for a certificate when I'm ready.
So if you can't find a record for something you know happened in Darlington, contact them, and perhaps they'll dig it out for you.

Have you tried Durham Records Online? You can search for free and pay to view transcriptions of:
-- 1841 through 1891 census for a large part of County Durham, plus 1901 for Easington district -- transcribed extracts from parish registers (christenings, confirmations, marriages, burials) for Easington district parishes, Houghton-le-Spring, and Stockton -- complete index searchable by given name, surname, age, parents, head-of-household, occupation -- instantly viewable order results (with online payment), plus results are emailed to you for safekeeping
plus the customer support is said to be excellent!

Thanks Holly
Yes I have received info from the County Office, my main trouble is I need records before 1700 back to the 1600's and the census aren't far enough back. I am at the moment in contact with the Durham record office to get copies of parish records. Just thought it would be great if they were all online, always hoping, that's me.
Thanks for the advise though, we new guys can always use that
Regards
Lones
