1851 lookup please Address included
« on: Friday 08 July 05 00:48 BST (UK) »

Hi,

I am looking for Matthew Jones born 1830 St Alkmund Derby

In 1861 and 1871 he was living at 166 Abbey St, St Werburgh, Derby and I am hoping he is there in 1851.

He should be with his wife Hannah b. abt 1831 and daughter Ann age abt 2. He was a shoemaker.

Any help would be gratefully recieved.

Thanks Angela.

Hi there Angela -

Here they are on the 1851 name index, the reference nos. may enable a full transcript look-up, if you are lucky enough to get one    Undecided  -

1851

JONES
Matthew - 21
Hannah - 20
Ann - 2

       (HO107/ 2142/ 71/ 14)

Ohhh bagpuss you are a star.

Could I ask another favour please. Could you check on your index for another Jones Huh  Thurston Jones born 1800 should be with wife Hannah. Don't know if there are any kids. They should be in St Alkmund or St Werburgh.  (he was in St Alkmund for the 1861 census). Be aware  that Thurston is often mistranscribed due to the odd name. Thanks a million for what you have done already. And Thanks  a million in advance for looking for Thurston.

All the best Angela.

Sorry Susan,    Sad

No Jones on the 1851 name index with that name (or variations of).  I am at the moment transcribing an index to the 1841 St. Alkmunds, Derby registration area, so if I come across either of your Jones'es on there I'll be sure to let you know.

All the best

HI Sue,

Thanks loads for looking.  I have just trawled through all 200+ pages for st Almund on the 1841 census looking for Thurston and Mathew (father and son) with no joy. Thurston married there Mathew chr there (1830) Thurston living there 1861 you would presume that he'd be there for the 41 and 51.
god bless the likes of you to transcribe an index.  I would be grateful if you do come across them whilst transcribing to let me know. Thurston was a clock maker in 1861 which might help to identify him as some of the pages of the 41 are a bit dodgy (like them all).

Well thanks for looking for him I am truely grateful.

All the best Angela.

Hi
Here are the details from the 1851 census image.

Address: No 4 St Alkmunds Church Yard.
Head: Walter Grey, 48, Shoe Maker, Employing 1 man, Derbyshire, Derby, married.
Wife: Ann Grey, 54, Derbyshire, Mackworth, married.
Daughter: Eliza Grey, 13, Mill Hand, Derbyshire, Derby.
Son in Law: Matthew Jones, 21, Shoe Maker, Derbyshire, Derby, married.
Daughter: Hannah Jones, 20, Derbyshire, Derby, married.
G Daughter: Ann, 2, Derbyshire, Derby.

though the image shows the name Grey, i think it is in fact Gray,
as per e.g. White's 1857 Directory of Derbyshire.

Thank you so much Alvaston Lad,

this is great it confirms his marriage to Hannah Gray and gives me her Parents.  I am so grateful to you for doing this lookup for me.

I don't expect you to go searching but if you ever come across a thurston Jones I would be really grateful if you could give me his details.  he was living at 40 Rutland rd, St Alkmund, derby in 1861. He was transcribed as Hurston! No panic he's not going anywhere just if you come across him. He was a clockmaker in 1861 I have tried in vain to find him in the 1841. He's there somewhere though. Ah well.

Thanks for everything.

Angela.

That would be brilliant you are so kind. I live in Ireland so accessing these sorts of places are out of the question for me. I really appreciate your kind offer.  I am interested in Thurston and his family but they are not my direct line. So there is no great panic over them. I have tried in vain to get a copy of St Oswalds parish records but they don't have them for sale. do they do a transcribed copy of the records do you know especially between 1780 and 1813 where there is a big gap on the IGI index. I was fortunate to get some lookups done by a good friend of mine but as always need more. I have a large family of Jones all born in Ashbourne and all seemed to live on King street, Ashbourne.  do you have the 1841 census for Derbyshire I can do lookups for you on there if you want I also have the 1841 for staffordshire if any of your lot strayed over there. Thanks again.

From an extremely grateful Angela.
